Traffic jam ... when will it end?
Al RiyadhROADS all over our country suffer from traffic jams during rush hours because the traffic officers do not do anything to unclog the congested roads. Traffic congestion has become something routine and normal that it should happen on a daily basis and drivers seem to have got accustomed to it. Most bridges and certain exits are congested all the time even if they are on the main arteries in major cities.Traffic congestion is one of the reason behind the chaotic situation on our roads. The problem gets worse and more dangerous during high seasons and official holidays. If we take a look at our roads and streets in Ramadan, we will see that they suffer from terrible congestions that bring traffic to a halt for hours and cause many accidents. Because of these congestions, most drivers...

Why should I get my rights through media and directives?
Al-Madina A RECENT program on Saudi TV showed the suffering of a bedridden obese citizen who also suffers from elephantiasis. The case reached the Emirate of the Eastern Province which issued immediate directives to quickly follow-up on this man's condition. A specialized medical team from King Saud Medical City in Riyadh then visited the patient in his home to examine him and determine next steps to address the situation, according to a news report issued by an electronic newspaper soon afterwards. I thank the TV program which did its job to highlight the needs of the people and to communicate their voices to the officials. I also would like to thank the emirate of the region for its rapid response and directives in this regard. But the critical question remains: Why did the health...

A silly joke!
By Abdulaziz Al-Suwaiegh Al-Madina A "ridiculous" joke from an Indian head of household made to a security staff at the Munich airport in southern Germany, as reported by news reports recently, caused his deportation directly back to India .. According to the police, the 42-year-old Indian traveler was traveling with his family from Mumbai to Bucharest. When his wife underwent a routine search for explosives, the man repeatedly said she had a bomb. Although the man confirmed to the security authorities at the airport, after being detained and interrogated on charges of disturbing public peace by threatening to commit a crime, that he was only joking, and the airport security authorities immediately returned him to his country while allowing his family members to continue their...

Who will pay attention to those not enrolled in citizens account?
THESE are five short stories. They are not sarcastic or naive. These are about five people who (do not) or (will not) know anything about the citizens account.I believe citizens' accounts are created according to people's knowledge to compensate them for the impact of the high living cost necessitated because of the economic changes in the Kingdom. These are the five (tragic) stories about them.* An elderly man in a small community away from the village (Quba), located tens of kilometers away from (Asiah), located tens of kilometers away from (Buraidah), located tens of kilometers away from the ordinary house he lives in with three young children (barely) to support them through sales of his goods in the winter. In the summer, he is unaware of the world (all the world), feeding his...

Inspection raids
By Alia Al-ShalhoubAl-RiyadhThe Ministry of Commerce and Investment has been conducting intensive campaigns to control commercial fraud and remove counterfeit goods in local markets. We see the frequent reports of the ministry about its achievements and viral videos that expose the exploitation and manipulation by a large number of traders who import expired or counterfeit products from abroad. With these campaigns some shops have closed their shops for fear of sanctions, confiscation of goods and arrest of illegal workers. This is not the first time I am writing about this important topic. I have been repeatedly asked to write about the ongoing deprivation of the rights of citizens because of the officials in charge do not deal with this problem radically to find a permanent solution.What...

Traffic consultative assembly
Khalid Al-SulimanOkazWHY does it sometimes seem hard for traffic wardens to satisfactorily meet the requirements of wider society? Traffic wardens are perhaps the only government body people deal with on a daily basis. As a result, evaluating its performance on the ground needs to take place continuously.Just pass by a traffic warden and notice qualified men who put so much effort into managing traffic. However, the problem does not lie in the traffic laws or techniques. There needs to be an office and staff who could implement plans and achieve goals. There is a lack of people on our streets. This is a fact no one has the courage to mention. It is not just limited to the lack of employees, there is also a struggle with some traffic wardens not performing their duties properly....

Are awareness campaigns really effective?
Mohammad Al-OufiMakkahThe awareness campaigns implemented by governmental agencies are unsuccessful in achieving their goals of raising awareness. Although these campaigns are sponsored by official agencies, it is possible to say that some of these awareness campaigns have totally failed while others have been very successful.Historically, we do not suffer from a lack of awareness campaigns. All ministries and governmental institutions have launched campaigns in the past. Some of the topics relate to drugs, seat belts, speeding, driving safe, not hiring overstayers, rationing water and electricity and smoking etc. Are these awareness campaigns really effective? Do they achieve their goals? Most, if not all, of these campaigns have failed in achieving their goals. The campaigns are...

Little Laila's painful story with a pedophile
By Hala Al-QahtaniAl-WatanLAILA was playing with other girls in front of her house located in a modest village on the outskirts of the bustling city. She was playing with little stones which she had collected from the earth, the only thing that nature offered them at no cost.Laila did not know that a bearded man was watching her regularly with the intent of marrying her to fulfill his lust. He was looking for a young snow white girl and did not care whether the girl had reached puberty to shoulder the responsibilities of a wife.He wanted to purchase Laila like chicken from her poor family, which was finding it difficult to make both ends meet and the girl used to beg for her poor parents. The man spent a few months luring his prey like a pig, giving her something to taste in order to...

Having more than one housemaid is a status symbol for some Saudis
BLURBI know some Saudi men who spend more than what they earn and love to boast about having two housemaids, two drivers and traveling to Europe a lot. The funny thing is that they wonder why they cannot save money.Faleh AlsoghairAlyaumHaving several domestic servants working for the same family has become an important status symbol for some Saudis. Those Saudis do not, in fact, need to have two housemaids and two drivers. They just do it so that they can boast to others. Some families bring two housemaids from two different countries and assign them different chores. Unfortunately, many children develop affection for housemaids and grow up to love them more than their mothers. This affection can have a negative impact on a child’s life in the future, especially when the housemaid returns...

Qatar’s political suicide
Hamoud Abu TalebOkazWe wish that the Emir of Qatar had waited for the ink to dry on the recommendations of the Riyadh summit that he attended before setting off his new bomb whose fragments have hit other Arab countries. We have become used to Qatar’s negative surprises, but we never expected anything like this as it is devoid of political principles and reflects poor diplomacy. The action also failed to take into consideration the simplest rules of bilateral relations between countries. There was no justification for what the Qatari ruler, Sheikh Tamim Al-Thani, said in his speech on Wednesday morning because the name of Qatar was not mentioned by summit speakers or in its final communiqué. The Emir might have been the victim of his subconscious mind in an attempt to raise suspicion...
