Why should I get my rights
through media and directives?

Abdullah Al Jamaili

Al-Madina A RECENT program on Saudi TV showed the suffering of a bedridden obese citizen who also suffers from elephantiasis. The case reached the Emirate of the Eastern Province which issued immediate directives to quickly follow-up on this man's condition. A specialized medical team from King Saud Medical City in Riyadh then visited the patient in his home to examine him and determine next steps to address the situation, according to a news report issued by an electronic newspaper soon afterwards. I thank the TV program which did its job to highlight the needs of the people and to communicate their voices to the officials. I also would like to thank the emirate of the region for its rapid response and directives in this regard. But the critical question remains: Why did the health affairs in the region and different hospitals remain silent on the issue when they were first approached. Why they all waited for a TV program or directives of the emirate to deal with this person, although this is one of their most basic duties and the inherent right of this patient? This is not the only case of its kind. There is a phenomenon that began to emerge on the surface; where many service institutions do not move to deal with crises or files of citizens until after they get highlighted in the media or modern social media! This is a confirmation that these institutions are either far from the pulse of the citizen, or that they ignore his rights, or perhaps suffer from administrative bottlenecks that made them useless waiting for directives and directions to move. Many citizens do not know how to get in touch with the media in order to raise their voices. Therefore, the officials of the service agencies must be obliged to open hot channels to directly communicate with people, and before that there must be an investigation of those who ignore the legitimate demands of citizens. This is what I wish Health Affairs of the Eastern Region implement today.
