Rights of Saudis' foreign wives
Al-MadinaTHE government allowed Saudis to marry foreign women and live with them in the Kingdom considering their strong desire to have such marital relationship on humanitarian grounds that may differ from one citizen to other. I am surprised to see the Passports Department’s dealing with foreign wives of the Saudis. The department considers them as foreigners who have come to the Kingdom to work temporarily and not as Saudis’ legitimate wives who have left their countries and relatives to live with individuals whom they love. They are also ready to discard their nationality to win Saudi citizenship. These foreign wives have accompanied their Saudi husbands to become mothers of Saudi children and live in the Kingdom as good citizens like other Saudi women in the country.Foreign wives...

We must appreciate the sincere ones
OkazPROFESSIONALLY we are moving in the right direction toward stimulating production, improving job performance, establishing integrity and accountability — especially with the wrongdoers — and combating corruption. The trend in this regard is clear and the evidence of implementation has appeared in some cases and others are on their way to do the same. And we have to walk in this direction quickly because this phase requires speed, and arriving late is better than not getting to our destination. What must be parallel to holding accountable and combating corruption is to monitor individuals with real achievements and knowledge and reward them in our government departments. The principle of punishment must be accompanied by the principle of reward, and defamation of the evil must be...

Recruitment offices and their fees
Al-WatanSUPPOSE I run a service office and you need to finish some procedures, which can be done by yourself in less than five minutes from your home. I will offer you my services and you can come to my office during business hours and you have to pay for every service. With regard to fees I would not advise you to look for a competitive price in the market because my office offers the best price. All the above is illogical, but actually it is a ground reality. I decided to conduct a quick survey of 25 recruitment offices in the Kingdom. I wondered at the compatibility of the electronic visa system with the electronic awakening we currently witness in various fields. The recruitment system on the Foreign Ministry's website may sound good, because individuals and institutions can complete...

Hate mongers on social media
Al-JazirahTHE discourse of hatred, extremism, exclusion and treachery has become an international phenomenon with social media taking the lead. The situation varies relatively depending on different political systems and countries, but everywhere it harms individual and society. As a result of this increasing phenomenon, governments have enacted laws governing publication. Recently, the Ministry of Information emphasized its determination to punish producers and promoters of rumors that affect public life through social media by imprisonment and fines. The move comes following the spread of rumors of new royal decrees, which were announced by individuals and irresponsible electronic newspapers. The rhetoric of hatred, extremism and violence is no longer confined to what has been published on...

Fraudsters never repent and people never learn
OkazA report published in Okaz recently about a real estate agent required to return money to the people whom he deceived mentioned the following: The details of the case go back to when a newspaper that specializes in real estate published an advertisement that a person called Abu Fahd was offering financing to build or buy a villa or an apartment and would accept returns in installments. The defendant’s mobile phone number was on the advert without his company’s name or license details. A large number of people responded to the advert and asked for help to buy homes. The defendant offered to pay 20 percent of the value of properties in advance and the rest in installments. Many people became victims of this scam. The details of this case make it a model for a series of scams that...

How to reduce traffic congestion
Al-YaumCongestion is a problem present in all major cities of the world, a problem that has become a source of concern for many. It is one of the causes of anxiety, tension and anger, all of which may lead to the spread of modern illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure, especially if one is under pressure on a daily basis. Some of us are reluctant to go shopping because of the traffic. The situation is dire during holidays, such as Ramadan and at other times of the year.We spend 300 to 1,000 hours in our cars a year. These figures do not include the time we wait at traffic lights. The distance we travel by car during our lifetimes could total over 1 million kilometers, which is equal to driving to the moon three times. The problem is exacerbated each year due to the increase in...

Be careful when judging others
Al-MadinahSome people judge others based on some specific criteria without viewing the larger picture. If they like a certain thing in someone, then they compliment that person. On the other hand, if they do not like a certain thing, then they start criticizing and ruining that person’s reputation. People tend to judge others based on their own criteria. Some people are judged according to their appearance, beliefs, views on certain topics, or reaction to certain issues. There are some people who consider that the man who prays his five obligatory daily prayers is an angel no matter what wrong that man does. So, even if he fails to maintain family ties or does not treat people respectfully, he still remains an angel. On the other hand, you find some people who judge smokers to be corrupt...

The shameful attitude of Saudi footballers in Australia
Al-RiyadhDuring a football match last month between Saudi Arabia and Australia, the entire Saudi team refused to observe a minute’s silence held in memory of people who died in a terror attack in London. The Saudi Arabian Football Federation apologized to FIFA for the players’ behavior. This unprofessional attitude became an opportunity for both Western and Arab media to criticize and attack us. The footballers’ actions are at odds with our foreign policy, which condemns all terrorist attacks no matter where they occurred.Observing silence is a small gesture, which could have played a huge role in strengthening bilateral relations and underscoring our sense of compassion. When the footballers refused to observe the silence, I was reminded of some people who refuse to stand for the...

Customer satisfaction is the best advertising tool
Al-JazirahThere is a beautiful Chinese business proverb: “Make your neighbor happy, and he will get closer to you.” Making your customers happy and satisfied with your services and what you offer them brings in more customers. This can also be seen in TV commercials that stress “customer satisfaction” to impress viewers. Many of our agencies, companies and banks, unfortunately, do not understand the value of this advice when providing the best services to their employees. If employees were to be satisfied, then customers would also be satisfied. In addition, the seasoned customer or client must be given special appreciation and priority of service. This should be given preference over looking for new customers. The business rule and philosophy of this advice requires wisdom that many...

Protect companies from bankruptcy
Minister of Finance Mohammed Al-Jadaan stated clearly that it is possible that businessmen and the private sector may lose money or even become bankrupt as a consequence of the austerity measures that are currently taking place. His statement indicates the importance of working to face and correct the situation rather than being afraid of its consequences. He said: “Going bankrupt is not shameful. We are not ashamed of being bankrupt because of austerity measures. What matters is protecting people through measures in addition to providing them with legal protection.”The minister’s statement can be understood in many ways. We can assume that his statement is meant to prepare national companies, especially since he directed his comments to all businessmen and highlighted the possible...
