Exercising in winter is good for your health
Al-Jazirah dailyMany people mistakenly think that working out in the winter does not benefit their health. In fact, working out, jogging or exercising in the winter is more beneficial to one’s health than working out in other seasons. We all know that the sun is an important source of Vitamin D. It is difficult to get this vitamin in the winter because there is not much sun. Besides, people often remain indoors during the winter and hence it is important that people sit in the sun to get sufficient amounts of the vitamin. When the weather changes, flu becomes common. This is because the influenza virus becomes active in cold weather while our immune systems become weak. Exercise can strengthen and enhance our immune systems. The more you exercise, the stronger your immune system becomes....

Grant citizenship to qualified expat workers
Al-Riyadh newspaperThe Supreme Court upheld President Trump’s decision to ban immigrants from certain countries from entering the US. Europe continues to suffer because of the influx of African and Syrian immigrants. Several European countries have put immigrants in miserable camps. Canada, on the other hand, recently announced that it is planning to welcome a million immigrants over the next three years.Just like the US at the end of the 1990s, Canada views immigrants as vital contributors to its economic progress. However, the US today refuses to let immigrants from certain countries enter. Canada’s decision to welcome a million immigrants is not entirely based on humanitarian grounds. In fact, Canada will only welcome immigrants who are educated, talented or rich. Just like other...

New increased tariffs: An electric shock!
Al-Riydah newspaperI guess everyone received an electric shock when the new electricity tariffs were announced. It is high time we became responsible when it comes to electricity consumption. My advice to everyone is to sit with their family members and think about ways to reduce consumption. Since the breadwinner will, undoubtedly, be the only one responsible for paying utility bills, including electricity bills, he should educate his family members about the best way to efficiently use electricity.Unfortunately, many families are careless when it comes to using energy. This should now change because of the new increased tariffs. If families do not start to rationalize the use of electricity, they will find it difficult to meet their other financial needs, as the careless use of...

The importance of public opinion
Al-Madina newspaperMANY newspapers, media tools and poll centers are keen to monitor the work of the officials in various sectors over a period of time. They decide a certain time limit in months or days, the most famous of these being the first 100 days in office. The media diligently review the work of the officials with a view to presenting them to the public opinion. This is a move that puts a lot of pressure on officials. It shows them that the media closely follow up on their work and the achievements they have made since assuming office. The media makes it clear to the officials that this follow-up is not only done by the supreme authority which has appointed them but also by public opinion, which is closely monitoring their activities. Most officials are deeply concerned about what...

We are proud of our young inventors
Al-Watan newspaperWE are proud that we started our life journey from the desert and grew up in this arid terrain. We are also proud of transforming the desert into an oasis, which was one of biggest challenges of men. Reforming the roughness of desert is not an easy task. However, by the Grace of God we have succeeded in addressing this challenge.Today the Empty Quarter does not remain like a desert known to the world yesterday. It has been turned into a huge industrial and mechanical center that stands on par with similar institutions around the world in terms of strength and uniqueness. It was the result of Saudis’ determination, resolve and thirst for success.Every day, our children demonstrate high caliber and efficiency to take on new challenges in different parts of the world,...

Trivializing knowledge
Makkah newspaperKNOWLEDGE loses its value in the face of corruption, but corruption is only one of many obstacles to development.Corruption is an important cause for failure stalling development in all countries, but once it is ruled out knowledge remains the biggest issue.Reducing the stumbling blocks before development to corruption alone is tantamount to a disregard for the value of knowledge. However, assuming knowledge without all its components is as grave as disregarding its value. The majority of ideas, themes and content broached over social networking sites assume that knowledge exists as an essential element in all developmental, social, engineering, administrative sectors. For example, we witnessed many discussions about the flood that drowned Jeddah recently on that basis.Many...

The impact of cinemas
Al-Madina newspaperWE have seen so many contradictions in the past. For example, some agencies organized film festivals in the Kingdom when there was a blanket ban on cinemas. Some short films produced by Saudis have won international awards even though those filmmakers were unable to screen their works inside their country due to the absence of cinema houses.A number of Saudi film producers have come to prominence in recent years. They have established their distinguished presence in the industry as a result of their excellent works. In the past 10 years Saudi filmmakers have bagged more than 60 awards at Arab and international film festivals.During the period Saudis have produced about 300 films. Unfortunately none of them were screened inside the Kingdom due to the absence of an...

How long will we suffer from floods in Jeddah?
Al-Madinah newspaperI am sure that almost everyone in Jeddah remembers the massive destruction that took place in the 2009 floods. I was actually very close to losing the mother of my children who was trapped at work. I still remember how we were talking and her battery went dead and I spent the entire day looking for her. After a day of worrying, I was very grateful to have her back at home after some heroic volunteers brought her home that night.Every time we have a new flood tragedy in the city, these volunteers work with the Civil Defense by giving everything they have, including their cars, to save people. Why should these innocent people pay the price on account of corruption in Jeddah?Unfortunately, eight years on, Jeddah is still suffering from destructive floods, again and again....

Why should we care about the reputation of those who are corrupt?
OkazAbdullah Al-Naser, a member of the Shoura Council, has called for a new article to the draft law on protecting whistleblowers. The article includes a general amnesty for people who commit financial and administrative corruption if they turn themselves in. It also calls for such individuals to be given anonymity so their reputations remain intact.I honestly cannot understand why we need to be concerned about the reputation of these wicked people. What I understand from this is that those responsible for stealing the Kingdom’s wealth should be provided with anonymity so that their reputations remain unblemished.I do understand that we need to consider the families of those who are corrupt. Actually, what these people have done to their own families is a crime in itself. They themselves...
