Venezuela and the curse of oil
MakkahAlthough it has a large oil reserve, Venezuela is today considered one of the world’s most impoverished states. Who would ever have imagined that that would happen? However, there are reasons why it has become a poor country. The most important reason is its heavy dependency on oil as its primary source of income. The slump in oil prices has dealt a strong blow to Venezuela. Moreover, the government did not take advantage of its oil revenues when the price of oil was high, nor did it build a strong and robust economy or invest in development projects which could have created additional sources of income. The Venezuelan government mismanaged its resources and failed to fight rampant corruption in its government sectors. This resulted in a complete disaster and fiasco. Today,...

Why are children begging on our streets?
OkazIt is inhumane to see children begging on our streets. Making them beg is in violation of their rights. The presence of child beggars is indicative of how backward a society is, and we usually think that children only beg in poor countries. Why is this happening in Saudi Arabia?I understand that not all Saudis are rich. In fact, many Saudi families struggle with poverty. Anyone can easily see this when passing through a poor neighborhood. These areas lack basic services and are undeveloped. It is this poverty that forces some families to send their children out to beg for money to survive. However, I believe that families that make their children beg should come under the scrutiny of the law.I will never forget the young four year old I once saw at a public park selling flowers while...

I am proud of being a woman!
Al-Yaum newspaperI wish the media would stop using the Arabic term “Al-Unsur Al-Nisa’i” to refer to women, which literally translates as the: “female element”. First of all, we are not inside a chemical laboratory nor are we conducting a dangerous chemical experiment in which the “female element” needs to be added to a chemical compound. We are women, not chemical elements.Whenever I hear this term, I feel as if women are some sort of element that is to be added into a mixture or are intruders in a male-dominated society. I feel as if men constitute the fundamental part of society and that they have allowed women or the “female element” to be a part of this society. What have women done wrong to be treated like this? Why are women’s achievements not given any attention...

Will Vision 2030 lead to a knowledge-based society?
Al-Jazirah newspaperWithin a short period of time, the Kingdom has managed to achieve some of its Vision 2030 goals. This has happened due to the leadership of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. He has succeeded in accelerating the steps toward development that will eventually lead to achieving the goals of Vision 2030.The vision contains a number of goals that we need to achieve. It also includes milestones by which all of the goals should be achieved and at a high standard. In fact, the vision seeks to make our society knowledge-based. We, therefore, should be ready to witness the coming economic and developmental revolution that is being led by Crown Prince Muhammad. He is leading Saudi Arabia’s Council of Economic and Development Affairs and observing the performance of governmental...

Beware of winter fires
Al-Yaum newspaperACCORDING to the World Health Organization, around 200,000 people from around the world die in tragic house fires every year. This is a huge number. Many specialized studies have linked the increasing number of house fires to the winter season, meaning house fires occur more frequently in the cold months. If we take a quick look at the house fires that occurred in the Kingdom over the past few years, we will realize that the above information is true and applies to us as well.Around three years ago, a fire ripped through a house in Al-Khobar. Although it was not a big fire, a big column of black smoke billowed from the house, killing an old lady and her maid. They suffocated to death after inhaling too much smoke.Last week, a house fire was reported in the local media,...

The Shoura and women empowerment
Al-Jazirah newspaperOVER the past several days, I followed closely the contentious and angry reactions to the Shoura Council's refusal to discuss a recommendation to empower women in leadership positions at Saudi embassies abroad.I honestly believe that this anger was unjustified and all these responses were unnecessary if we took into account the possible outcome of a discussion on this proposal or any other proposals for that matter.I do not remember any coherent decision adopted by the Shoura Council all these years after lengthy discussions on its floor. Therefore, it is immaterial whether the council approved or rejected the proposal. However, all of us remember the tension that prevailed for many years over the issue of women driving and how the council refused to discuss it. The...

Futile ministerial visits
Makkah newspaperFINALLY I found out something astounding about the Ministry of Transport. It is the ministry’s official Twitter account and its way of disseminating general information, not the news about projects or announcements by officials.A few days ago the ministry said on its Twitter account that some 43,000 vehicles entered Riyadh through the Qassim Expressway and if all those vehicles were made to line up, they will cover the distance between Jeddah and Taif. This information is really exciting and it shows the ministry is aware of what is happening on its roads and can understand the problems that people often complain about. In fact, the transport minister or his deputy need not visit and meet people to learn about their complaints and grievances. A few days ago the deputy...

The bad people around us
Al-Watan newspaperI NORMALLY talk about beauty in art, people and place and keep away from ugly talk to gain mental satisfaction. However, the presence of ugliness often helps us understand the value of beauty and embrace the joy.I do not know why I got the idea of recalling the worst people in our surroundings, who I had encountered or still encounter in my life, in an attempt to find out how my readers consider them. I may be wrong in my judgment, however.Firstly, I like to mention two types of teachers we find in our schools. One is a teacher of Shariah having extreme views. He exploits emotions of his students and lack of their knowledge to inject extremist ideas in their minds and promote a culture of death and torment. He classifies other teachers, intellectuals and media persons on...

Security cameras needed everywhere
Makkah newspaperINCIDENTS that take place in different parts of the country almost every day emphasize the need for installing security cameras at our homes and institutions. These cameras will undoubtedly help uncover crimes and other unseemly incidents and track down their perpetrators.Users of social networking sites and smart apps occasionally exchange video clips of incidents captured by surveillance cameras installed in shops or houses. This once again emphasizes the need to install such cameras at important public places in view of their value in crime detection and prevention. Many countries have realized the importance of surveillance cameras and asked owners of houses and establishments, regardless of their size, to install them on their premises. The authorities inspect these...

How can we find jobs for all the unemployed Saudis?
Al-Madinah newspaperUnemployment is the most dangerous problem any country can face. Look around the world and you will see even advanced countries struggling to reduce their rates of unemployment and to create job opportunities for their young people. The problem affects the unemployed and all of society. Unemployment among high school and college graduates in our country has been on the increase. What is worse is that young people who studied postgraduate courses abroad are also unemployed, an indication of how large the problem is.According to the General Statistics Authority, there were 1.5 million people employed in the public sector in 2016. These individuals have a range of academic qualifications from graduate to postgraduate degrees. According to the General Organization of Social...
