Promote the use of bicycles
Al-Jazirah newpaperEvery Saudi woman must have been happy when the government announced that women could now drive. Shortly after this good news, the authorities announced that women would be allowed to drive trucks and ride motorcycles just like men. Although it would be premature to decide whether women need to drive trucks, I was glad that the choice is left for women to decide.Riding bicycles is still not common in our country. If you see a man riding a bicycle on the street, you would look at him strangely because he would be doing something unusual. However, in advanced countries, people ride bicycles all the time and use them as a means of transport. By the way, bicycles were used in France for the first time in 1791 as a means of entertainment and exercise. In other countries, even...

No one can force a woman to cover her face
Okaz newspaperThe well-known expression, “You are a woman, cover your face,” seems to be disappearing from our society. This is because people today are more aware of their rights and freer than they used to be. However, a recent incident in a Riyadh court was a blast from the past of how extremism used to be the norm and how people’s freedoms used to be curbed. Some employees believe that they should control women’s appearance at work. In the Supreme Court of Riyadh, a judge called the police to expel a female intern from the building because she did not cover her face. This is inhumane and unacceptable. There is no law in Saudi Arabia that commands women to cover their faces. This is a matter relating to personal freedom. In other words, no judge or anyone in a high position...

Where is the southern train?
Al-Watan newspaperThe Saudi Arabian Railway Organization announced the North-South Railway Project way back in 2004. Since then, railroads reached many parts of the country but not its south. The railroad has been extended to Hudaitha in the north on the Jordanian border, but the authorities did not take any step to push forward the southern railway project. The project will have to make a U-turn to justify its name. It reminds us the hero of a novel who fabricated excuses to continue his journey to the north, turning his back to the south. When the government announced North-South Railway, it explained that it would be implemented in two phases. The first phase was to have two lines; one from Riyadh to Hudaitha and the second from the midpoint of the first line to the bauxite-rich Zubaira,...

Let's speak pure Arabic to expats
Al-Madina newspaperIN my last article, I explained the close relationship between local dialects and classical Arabic in order to strengthen our confidence in the dialects. I like to emphasize that the various dialects that we speak in the Kingdom's north, south, east and west are Arabic language with slight differences in pronunciation.I wrote this introduction to discuss the strange language we use while talking to expatriates who live and work all over the Kingdom. They have come from different countries having diverse cultures with the majority belonging to the continents of Asia and Africa. These expats work in almost all places including homes, markets, airports, streets and places of entertainment. However, the language we use while talking to these foreign workers is pathetic,...

Justice Ministry’s up-to-date services
Al-Watan newspaperJUSTICE is fundamental to everything in life. We often criticize society’s negligence toward alleviating the suffering of the poor by meeting their basic requirements. We have started this criticism several years ago and it did not go waste as we are yielding its fruits day after day.Like we expressed our displeasure and anger over the poor services and performance of a number of ministries, we appreciate today the changes that have taken place in these ministries, even if it is small. It is our duty to pay tribute to the various aspects of improvement and development that have occurred in a number of public services as well as ministries.Today I will start with the Ministry of Justice, as I believe that it comes on top of the pyramid of ministries. If the Justice...

Bite my heart, but not my bread
Al-Watan newspaperTHE Saudi market is one of the largest in the Middle East in volume of sales. Traders make huge gains (I am not being jealous) due to various factors, including monopoly and the absence of real consumer protection.Social media and e-commerce websites revealed the greed of traders and monopolists who sought nothing but profits despite little taxation in the Kingdom, compared to other countries of the world. For example, figures show that the automobile spare parts market in the Kingdom is the fifth largest worldwide for the US manufacturers. The Japanese industry accounts for 35 percent of the Saudi spare parts market. With the apparent stagnation in global and domestic car sales, the sharks in the market raised the prices of spare parts by up to 500 percent. Of course, as...

Foreign dominance in advertising sector
Al-Jazirah newspaperIN the past few days our society has been exposed to some erroneous and offensive advertisements, which resulted from absolute reliance on foreign content makers and the monopoly of certain advertising companies run by certain Arab nationals who often refuse to accommodate young Saudi men and men in their firms.I have noticed that these Arabs put obstacles in the way of Saudis obtaining jobs in the advertising sector. They make all possible efforts to ensure that Saudis are not employed in the advertising market, taking advantage of the distrust of advertisers and creating doubt about the experience and ideas of the national cadre.I do not blame business owners and advertisers for taking such a negative stand, as they want to ensure success of their advertising...

Death from working too hard
Al-Watan newspaperWorking hard is important if we want the Kingdom to take gigantic steps in industry. However, we first need to overcome our hate for work. The Japanese word “karoshi” means death from working too hard. When several Japanese people died from working too hard the Japanese government launched a campaign to raise employee awareness about “karoshi” and the importance of work-life balance. The government even paid incentives to employees who finished their work and left on time.I once overheard female receptionists at a hotel in the UK talking about their days off. One of them was happy that she was off from work the next day while the other had completely forgotten about her day off because she had been overworking herself.Let us compare the situation in Japan and the...

Doctors without ethics
Al-Yaum newspaperWe all agree that working in healthcare is a humane profession. Doctors treat patients, give them hope and place smiles on their faces. I was, therefore, totally shocked when I read a report about two doctors who were arrested by the police for selling illegal pills. Both of the doctors are Arabs and they smuggled the pills into the Kingdom from abroad. A large amount of banned pills were confiscated. This is a catastrophe that makes one wonder if these doctors have any conscience at all. How could they dare to do something like this when the medical profession requires them to help and treat patients? These doctors most likely possess fake medical certificates or maybe they are criminals in sheep’s clothing. As far as I know, Western universities do not easily award...

Laws must protect employers as well as women employees
Madinah mewspaperI must first thank the Ministry of Labor’s media center for keeping the public up to date with the latest developments and decisions that the ministry takes. I hope the media centers of other ministries follow suit.Khalid Aba Al-Khail, the ministry’s spokesman, said the ministry found 5,919 violations relating to Saudization and female employment in women’s accessory shops. Some 21,531 shops have complied with Saudization requirements and rules pertaining to employing women, while 5,325 warnings have been issued to shops. The ministry has introduced several programs to help women adapt to work life. This includes programs such as “Qurrah” and “Wusool.” The former encourages mothers employed in the private sector to continue working with the peace of mind that...
