Let our young men join the army
Al-MadinahSheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia and the head of the Senior Scholars Commission and Ifta Council, recently called on the Kingdom’s top officials to facilitate enrolling young Saudi men into military colleges and said that there was a need to change some of the requirements and conditions for performing military service. This would allow more young men to join the army and allow these colleges to benefit from new cadre. The Grand Mufti’s statement was reported by Sabq.com, an electronic news website. The Grand Mufti’s call comes at a time when our country is facing many challenges and threats from terrorists from both within the Kingdom and abroad. The situation is precarious and needs urgent action. We need to increase the number of young men...

Are there really 200,000 job opportunities?
Al-Hayat dailyThe number 60 is frequently used by local media, especially by ministers and top officials. For example, the Minister of Finance was reported to say that 60 percent of Saudis are rich; Shoura Council member Khalil Al-Khalil was reported to say that 60 percent of young Saudi men are ready to join terrorist organizations; and the Minister of Health was reported to say that 60 percent of Saudis suffer from obesity.Nowadays, the number 200,000 is also frequently used in the media. Al-Madinah daily reported the other day that the Industrial Energy City, which will be built soon, will create 200,000 job opportunities. It appears that this number was mentioned by experts interviewed by the newspaper. I did a quick search on this figure and found that it was cited by the Ministry of...

Are our schools prepared to deal with diabetic students?
Al-JazirahNo one can imagine the anxiety, tension and fear that parents feel when their children who have recently been diagnosed as diabetic go to school. They constantly worry about whether their children will be provided with enough care and support at school to enable them to deal with an emergency relating to their condition. They are scared that diabetes might prevent their children from learning. In principle, diabetes should not be a reason to exclude students from learning and educational programs because such children have the same right to learning opportunities as other students.Do the school principals in our country know how many of their students are diabetic? Do schools have records of the health, social and educational background of their students who are diabetic?In...

Riyadh needs more green areas
Al-HayatIn 2018, the Riyadh Public Transport project will hopefully be completed. A lot of trees have been cut down because of this project. I do not know the exact number, but it is very large. Most of the trees were located on main streets. As far as I know, no replacement trees have been planted in other streets to make up for those that have been lost. A big city like Riyadh suffers from a shortage of green areas and trees. Moreover, not enough care is given to green areas.A few years ago, Riyadh Municipality removed trees from different roads and squares; no substitute trees were planted in other areas. Perhaps this is the reason why Riyadh suffers from desertification and why no solution has so far been found for this problem. As the Kingdom’s capital, Riyadh is in dire need of...

Anti-terrorism should be added to our school curricula
Al-HayatIt is important to revise the elementary school curricula to insure that students develop correct ideas. In fact, students at this age tend to be influenced by the ideas that they are exposed to. Anything they learn at this age will be etched in their minds.Of course, some might disagree with what I say. My wife, children and I lived in the UK from 2003 to 2013. When I moved there, I had children aged eight, four and one. All of my children went to UK schools and studied there. My first and second sons were influenced by the British school curricula and several important ideas were instilled in their minds. For example, they learned that it is important for one to always be honest, have the right to debate and argue, believe in equality and be proud of one’s country and history....

The need for a successful public transport system
Al-JazirahNO two people can differ about the significance of the public transport, which is an easy means of moving inside or between cities. It alleviates traffic congestion and reduces environmental pollution. To be successful, the public transport should be well designed and should have a sufficient number of population to serve.By the good design I mean that the network of railways or roads should cover the entire country.I was happy when the Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) launched the North Train. It is extending from Riyadh to the extreme northern border. The train succeeded in its first stage connecting Riyadh with the Qassim region. The evidence of this is the large number of passengers. However, the passengers started complaining of three things: The high cost of tickets,...

Poor treatment of girls at shelter homes
Al-WatanTHERE were recent reports of chaos and confusion at Dar Al-Fatayat in Makkah. The incident led to the arrest of nine of its inmates. Similar reports have been published about the same institution earlier. It shows that the Dar, which is a shelter home under the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, has been facing some problems. The Dar authorities used to take some its inmates to girls’ schools to explain the mistakes they had committed and repent on such wrongdoings. They are also forced to talk positively on its programs and facilities. This provoked some inmates and they refused to participate in such humiliating activities. How can we describe the Dar as a caring center for such girls? In a statement following the rioting at the Dar, Khaled Abalkhail, spokesman of the...

Move to make healthcare free
OkazBUSINESSMEN, traders, companies and establishments are often accused of exploitation by unnecessarily hiking prices of goods and services. Some people think that the main objective of businessmen is to exploit the state and citizens to serve their vested interests. This is an age-old view. It is etched in the minds of people due to actions of certain crazy businessmen and traders. The widening divide between the rich and poor is another reason for creating such a perception in the minds of people. I don’t want to go into details and analyze the reasons. I would like to take this opportunity to support the recent government move to provide some services to citizens free of charge, especially health services. Our government’s move to privatize public hospitals is a strategic and...

PE in girls' schools: A decision without necessary preparations
MakkahLAST week witnessed the issuance of two contradictory decisions. On Monday, the consultative Shoura Council rejected a proposal to introduce physical education at girls’ schools and colleges across the country and called for a detailed report explaining the gradual progress of sports in the Kingdom, including that of girls, supported by facts and figures. The 150-member Shoura urged the General Sports Authority to intensify its community sports program for both men and women, covering all regions and cities of the country. The next day, when newspapers published reports on the Shoura Council's rejection of the proposal, we saw Minister of Education Dr. Ahmed Al-Isa announcing a surprise decision to introduce physical education at girls’ schools beginning next academic year. He...

Sports for girls is a blessing
Al-WatanTHE Ministry of Education finally approved the implementation of physical education in girls' schools in a bold move even though the Shoura Council rejected proposals in this regard after discussing the matter in several sessions. The ministry succeeded in making this happen after years of resistance from many quarters. Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardio respiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and obesity.Honestly, the ministry should have taken this step years ago and have opened faculties of physical education to train girls as...
