Students should not waste the long school vacation
Al-WatanOur sons and daughters in intermediate and high schools as well as colleges should take full advantage of the long school vacation and do something constructive with their time. They should not waste their time on trivial pursuits. This year’s school vacation is long and it should not be wasted. I am not saying that students should not have time for fun. Rather, there needs to be some sort of balance in their lives. Leisure activities are important and needed. Let us all focus on pursuits that are constructive. For example, students should think about starting a small project that might become big in the future and help enhance the economy. Time is of the essence and life is short.Look at the Japanese and how they have turned their country, which suffers from a severe shortage of...

Equip girls’ schools with sports facilities
AlyaumEvery now and then, the issue of schoolgirls taking physical education classes arises, with many people calling for the subject’s inclusion in all schools. We have two groups: the supporters and the detractors. The detractors consider the supporters as secularists who want to spread corruption in our schools. The supporters consider those who oppose to be extremists. Frankly speaking, I have not seen any of these groups tackling the issue objectively.Supporters of PE classes tend to severely attack those who oppose, describing them as people with militant thoughts and ideologies. All those who oppose such classes claim that the supporters want to corrupt society. There is nothing objective in these opinions.I believe that the opinions of both groups are unimportant now and do not...

Treat domestic workers with respect
AlyaumFrankly speaking, I regret writing about this issue again. I have written many articles about it and so have several of my colleagues. Although the majority of Saudis are forgiving and tolerant and love to give charity to help the underprivileged, many tend to treat expatriate workers unfairly. We must realize that the progress and prosperity of a nation depend on it respecting the rights of human beings and protecting and upholding these rights regardless of race, color, language or nationality. The rights of human beings should be respected at all times. Our history and forefathers instilled these values in our minds. If we were to take a quick walk down history lane, we would discover that Muslims always had good relations with other nations. History bears witness to this fact....

It's wrong to bargain with poor street vendors
MakkahWhile walking outside the Grand Mosque, I saw an old man sitting near the entrance to a large hotel selling miswak sticks. Looking frail and tired, he appeared to be over 70 years old. I stood there watching the old man taking miswak sticks from a bag he had with him and putting them on a piece of cloth which he had placed on the ground. Pilgrims and visitors of the Grand Mosque approached the old man and bought miswak sticks from him without bargaining. Then a woman approached him. She appeared to be very rich as she was wearing a diamond-studded Rolex watch and very expensive jewelry probably worth around SR100,000. She looked at some miswak sticks and asked what the price was. When he told her SR15, she expressed surprise and started bargaining with him. She offered him SR5 but he...

New initiative to fight unemployment
Al-WatanHIGH-CLASS unemployment is a new term that denotes jobless Saudi post graduates including those who have obtained master and doctorate degrees in different specializations. It is estimated that there are about 20,000 jobless young Saudi men and women in this category, according to statistics published by the Ministry of Civil Service and carried by the public media. In order to end unemployment of highly qualified Saudis, a new initiative has been launched by the Center of Excellence for Research last year to employ all Saudi women who have obtained post graduate degrees in science and arts. The move was instrumental in bringing about qualitative change in the lives of many young Saudi women, helping them achieve success and excellence. The initiative was spearheaded by two women...

Gates of Madinah...absence and distortions!
MakkahGATES of different cities clearly reflect the area's history, possessions and the things it is famous for. Coastal cities are always proud of their beaches, snails and fish, and the same applies to historical cities that highlight their historical monuments and heritage. In fact, the interior of Madinah, which has a special historical age and high rank among the cities, does not reflect this valuable status to those who visit it, unfortunately; it is devoid of signs that welcome visitors, as well as aesthetic figures at the main gates of the city and even in the streets!I am well aware that there were advertisements about approvals to build the gates of Madinah, which were announced long time ago. It's worthy of mentioning that these gates will be compatible with the nature of...

Civil Service Ministry and employment
MakkahTHINK about this question. What is the work of the Civil Service Ministry except receiving statements of job requirements of other ministries and government departments and setting out a schedule to supply their manpower requirements?I am sure that some Shoura members are unaware of the nature of the ministry’s work and believe that it’s in charge of all employment activities. But in reality it’s not true.As a result of this situation, the Shoura Council will soon discuss a proposal by its administrative and human resources committee to provide employment powers to the ministries of health and education to complete employment procedures at the two ministries. The proposal was actually made to reduce the burden of the Ministry of Civil Service, according to a report carried by...

Dar Al-Fatayat girls deserve special care
Al-WatanIT is the human values and the ability to identify them is what keeps us alive in this world, which is full of trouble and tribulations. Instead of taking a positive step to solve even the small problems of others with courage, people turn their back toward them, thinking it is not their responsibility. As a result of this attitude, minor problems get bigger and complicated. Universal law encourages us to support people in trouble and for us Muslims it is a religious duty and obligation.Last week security agencies quelled a riot staged by a group of girls inside the Dar Al-Fatayat in Makkah, a rescue home for juveniles under the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, as they went berserk and broke office windows and furniture when officials refused to listen to their demands.The...

The criminal use of smart phones
Al-JazirahA VIDEO clip recently went viral on social media websites. I received it more than 10 times on WhatsApp alone. It showed an owner of a bookstore claiming that he had discovered a sorceress who came to make photocopies of some papers containing talismans.I am not here defending the woman who does not mean much to me. On the contrary, I salute everyone who discovers corruption and crimes. However, fighting corruption is not done by posting a video footage on the Internet. This is clear defamation according to the cyber crimes law. Such acts will turn the entire society to the jungle law where survival is for the fittest.People may attempt to take revenge on others who they may consider to be criminals by publishing videos on social media with comments that often contain foul...

Saleswomen should be proud of the work they do
MakkahA salesperson marketing shoe cleaning kits approached an Arab tourist in a European country and asked him to try a new product. The tourist knelt down, took off his shoes and gave them to the salesperson. Although the tourist removed his shoes as a mark of respect, the salesperson took exception to this and asked him to put his shoes back on. Having done so, the salesperson then cleaned the man’s shoes, something that left the tourist surprised and shocked. The salesperson intended to deal with the situation professionally and did the job without feeling any shame or stigma. He did not feel any shame kneeling down and cleaning the man’s shoes. Unfortunately, some Arabs look down on people who do jobs such as these. The majority of saleswomen in the Kingdom who work in retail and...
