How many ‘Musawwaras’ are there in the Kingdom?
Al-Watan dailyFinally, the Musawwara district in Al-Qatif is clean now that the authorities have eliminated all terrorists. The courageous security officers did a great job that should have been done over a decade ago. In fact, concerned authorities issued a decision to remove and redevelop the district more than 10 years ago. This district is known for its narrow alleys that make it difficult for ambulances, firefighting trucks and even police cars to enter. Moreover, it is an unplanned district. It is used to hide weapons and drugs and even terrorists and fugitives.Al-Qatif residents have suffered because of the actions of terrorists who were hiding in the Musawwara area. Some murders remain unsolved as the killers have not been found and may have hidden in the narrow streets of the...

Saudize the date palm industry
Al-Riyadh dailyIn one of its latest reports, the General Statistics Authority has indicated that the number of palm trees in the country has reached around 28.5 million. The Kingdom’s population is 31 million and the number of Saudis is 22 million. In one of his statements to Makkah daily around two years ago, Palm Tree National Center director Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Janoubi noted that the Kingdom consumes 800,000 tons of dates while the surplus reaches 300,000 tons. The Kingdom exports 70,000 tons of dates every year and 30 percent of the exports are in the form of gifts and charity. If we assume that the percentage of production increased 1.1 million tons to reach 1.3 million tons, then we are talking about a huge number of palm trees and a very high production rate. We are in dire need of...

Animals and reshaping of societal humanity
Al-JazirahThe pride of some people we see in the repeated stories of animal torture on social media is enough proof of the lack of awareness among some members of the society regarding animals and their God-given rights. The animals are creatures with souls and spirits, which Almighty Allah has created to live on the earth and continue their life cycle as predetermined for them by the Creator. This past week two stories on animal torture surfaced on social media. The first was about a man who used his knife to kill cats and the second about another man who found joy in murdering rabbits. These two stories stood as clear evidence that these two persons are innate criminals with the love of crime deeply rooted in them. They find pleasure and joy in killing and torturing the poor animals.They...

Madinah's date market must be developed
MakkahMADINAH is well-known for its date palm trees since time immemorial. We can see a large number of palm trees in different parts of the region. In the past, Madinah was known as a valley of date palms between two highlands. The migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions to Madinah enhanced its significance. There are more than 70 varieties of dates in Madinah including what can be eaten fresh. The most eaten is tamar, which is the finest and most expensive. Date is a fruit full of vitamins and contains minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium and sulfur. It also contains several vitamins, as well as easily digestive sugars. It has many health benefits. The government has recently approved the establishment of the Cooperative Society for...

Why it takes long to issue social decisions?
Al-JazirahMANY decisions in our country take long to issue to the point that I can safely say the time they take can be described not only too long but immensely exaggerated. The decision to introduce sports in the girl schools needed a long time and heated discussions in the newspapers and the social media before it was issued.A number of opponents took to the floor to voice their opposition to sports for girls. They did not hesitate to call its propagators bad names. When the decision to introduce sports in girl schools was issued, the opponents suddenly disappeared in thin air. They kept quiet as if they have no voices now.Why does the dialogue and discussions in our country extend for years to issue a social decision like the girl’s sport, which the world had adopted for decades or...

Growing divorce cases alarm Saudis
Al-WatanTHE Justice Ministry tells us every year about increasing cases of divorce (which Allah considers as the most hateful thing) in the Kingdom. This is really shocking and denotes an unhealthy phenomenon in our society. The main victims are children who pay heavily for their parents’ separation. In 2014, the Ministry of Justice recorded 240,000 divorce cases in the Kingdom’s regions. The General Statistics Authority put the number of divorce cases at 54,471, which declined to 46,373 in the following year. This means an average of 127 divorce cases take place in the Kingdom every day and five cases per hour. According to a report published by Al-Watan Arabic daily on July 2, 2016, a divorce case is reported after every five marriages in the Kingdom.Conflicts between spouses often end...

New strategy needed to fight unemployment
Al-WatanA news bulletin published by the General Statistics Authority on the job market situation in the first quarter of 2017 showed that the number of jobseekers among Saudi men reached 219,000 against 688,000 among women (with the total reaching 907,000). This statistics show that there are nearly one million jobseekers in the Kingdom, with 50 percent of them being university graduates.A manpower survey conducted by the authority also revealed that there are 723,000 unemployed Saudis with women accounting for 55 percent of the total. According to this figure, unemployment rate among the Saudis has reached 12.7 percent, which is considered the highest rate. Advanced countries consider 10 percent unemployment rate as a dangerous indicator. Unemployment rate among Saudi women has reached...

Cancel high school examinations
Al-HayatHigh school exam results have been published. Some families are happy because their children will gain admission in their chosen fields in college while others are unhappy because their children have not achieved the required grades. The system of college admission in the Kingdom is unfair. Students are judged according to how well they perform in exams. We do not know how students achieve their scores and we do not know whether they were fairly assessed. A third grade student sits many exams in the final year and works hard to achieve a high score. There is no way we can assess his intellectual abilities according to how well he writes an exam paper. There is a famous Arabic saying: “Upon taking an exam, one is either honored or disgraced.” This saying is inculcated in the minds...

Will child marriages ever end?
OkazA member of the Shoura Council recently submitted a recommendation to the council calling for a ban on the marriage of girls under 15 years of age. This recommendation was submitted by a Shoura Council member and not by the Ministry of Justice, which has not resolved the thorny issue of underage marriage for decades and has not done anything about it.Dr. Latifa Al-Shalan, who is a member of the Shoura Council, said child marriages are against the Convention of the Rights of the Child, the Convention of the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Children and Women, adding that the Kingdom is signatory to all of the above agreements. Although child marriages are a crime in all...

Why is everyone talking about taxes?
Al-MadinahWhen the Ministry of Finance announced that it will introduce a 5 percent VAT in 2018, some columnists supported the decision while others opposed it and even criticized it despite VAT having nothing to do with an individual’s income. Moreover, 5 percent is a minimal figure when compared with the VAT rate in other countries. There is one thing that is for sure: VAT will be deducted from a person’s income indirectly. How will this be done? The tax will be imposed on the import of goods bought overseas and sold in local markets; companies will not be affected and it will be citizens who will bear the cost. Those who support the tax and those who oppose it agree on one thing and that is that the VAT will be paid in exchange for the public services that the government provides to...
