Why can’t Saudis with PhDs find jobs?
Al-MadinahThe number of unemployed Saudis with PhDs increases every year. This is an appalling fact. While we accept that our society is home to unemployed Saudis with undergraduate degrees, having an increasing number of PhD holders who are unemployed is shocking. These unemployed Saudis should be teaching at our universities and not be sitting idle at home. They are supposed to benefit our country and share their knowledge with Saudi students. After all, they spent many sleepless nights abroad studying. This situation reflects on the poor planning on the part of the bodies that allow students to go abroad to study when there is little possibility of them finding jobs when they return to the Kingdom. Each PhD student costs the government a lot of money in tuition fees. The postgraduate...

Unpaid work, but invaluable
Makkah newspaperI worked in a foreign country for three years. The great disparities in social aspects and work between the West and the Arab nation attracted my attention. Westerners in general do not have better mental or physical abilities than what we have, but the differences lie in the fields of interest and priorities.I will not go into the details of the disparities between us. But there is a key issue that they differ from us. Among the priorities of the Western society, where I lived for some time, is their keen interest in volunteerism. All of those who I worked with allocate at least 100 hours per year for voluntary work. This volunteerism is supported and encouraged by the society, companies and media. It is included in the education system. It is of no importance in what...

Human resource managers at Saudi hospitals
OkazHOLD them accountable. The vast majority of them deserve to be hanged in a public place. They are the secret enemy and the one responsible for the poor condition of the medical services provided in most of our hospitals and the source of misery for most medical staff. We should also hold human resource managers accountable of medical mistakes committed, because they are the ones who recruited the doctor and the ones that examined their papers and certificates. In addition they were the one, who most likely were enthusiastic to replace a better doctor with the one of his choice.Human resource managers control the lives of the medical staff, nurses and managers. They enjoy delaying promotions, employment and the issuance or restructuring of salaries. They always prefer low salaries over...

Scandals and fake documents
Al-WatanWE know that cancer patients bear a lot of pain because of the nature of the disease and its treatment. There are heartless people who, instead of trying to alleviate the pain of these helpless patients, try to increase it by selling contaminated medicines.Mona Baalbaki, the previous head of pharmacy at Rafeek Hariri Hospital in Beirut has been sacked by the General Disciplinary Council “for stealing a large quantity of Health Ministry-donated cancer medicines from the hospital and selling them for hundreds of millions of Lebanese pounds.”The worst part, as per the same report, is that she was replacing stolen medicines with expired drugs given to a larger number of cancer patients, mostly women and children, without their knowledge. Baalbaki had reportedly brought the...

Expats' contributions appreciated
OkazTHERE are several objectives for the new Vision 2030 and we agree with all of them and disagree with some of the policies and methods followed to realize those objectives. One of its main objectives is to focus on the education, training and employment of Saudis as well as creating a suitable working environment for them either as an employee or an investor in one of the development projects. This is a lofty goal and at the same time it does not prevent us from making use of international expertise in various fields, especially from Arab and Islamic countries, to implement the country’s development plans. The Vision 2030, which was set out with the support of foreign expertise, emphasizes the need to make use foreign manpower for our developmental programs.Everybody in this country...

Misconceptions about animal sacrifice
Abdullah Al-AlweetAl-WatanEVERY year millions of heads of sheep are sacrificed during the Eid Al-Adha festival. Such a huge number of sheep would not have been slaughtered for sacrifice if people had been given correct information about this ritual. A lot of money is wasted on sacrifice by people, who lack proper religious knowledge. Some people wrongly believe that it’s a Sunnah, which should be followed by every Muslim. This is a mistake because this animal sacrifice is required only from cattle owners who rear animals and do business with it, and others are not required to do the ritual. The Holy Qur’an says: “That they may witness things that are of benefit to them and mention the name of Allah on appointed days over the beast of cattle that He hath bestowed upon them. (Al-Haj:...

Let women teach boys in primary school
Al-WatanRegardless of the similarities between men and women, it is true that men can never give children the same level of sympathy, kindness and passion as women. In their first year at school, children need female teachers to make the learning process more enticing and attractive. By children, I mean little boys and girls aged six to 12.The Ministry of Education has published a study calling for women to teach boys at the primary level. As is the case with every decision involving women, people are divided on this issue. While some are in support, others oppose it without understanding the arguments. The ministry has conducted this study with the involvement of specialists and religious scholars, meaning it was published following discussions with experts. As far as I understand, the...

How failures lead to success
Al-RiyadhClinical psychologist Samuel West who loves to research failed products and find out why they flopped opened Sweden’s Museum of Failures. West believes that success is a result of failure and that making mistakes can lead to success. The museum has over 65 items on display. These items flopped despite the large amount of money spent on research, feasibility studies and marketing. They include Google Glasses, Trump: The Game, Sony’s Betamax, Coke Blak (a coffee-flavored soda), Harley-Davidson perfume “Hot Road,” and many other items.Although they flopped, these products helped the companies that produced them better understand the market and customers and return with stronger products that took the market by storm. The best example is Apple’s Newton, which was a complete...

Why don’t people trust Saudi workers?
Al-Jazirah dailyIf you go to a barbershop in Riyadh, you will notice that many Moroccan barbers have their hairdressing diplomas displayed on the wall together with medals they were awarded. These diplomas are similar to doctor’s diplomas which make a patient feel comfortable and reassured that he is in safe hands and that the doctor is a professional who has expertise in his field. The same thing applies to barbers. Many customers feel comfortable when they go into a barbershop and see these diplomas. They feel they are in safe hands and that there is no need to worry that the barber might be a novice. I have been to several barbershops run by Moroccans. Some of them have hairdressing diplomas from Fédération Nationale de la Coiffure au Maroc, which is the national federation of...

No to drugs and the dab dance
Okaz dailyA well-known Saudi singer has been traveling from one Arab city to another for fear that he will be apprehended by security officers after he performed an inappropriate dance move during one of his onstage performances. The singer is clearly not aware of the important role artists can play in promoting ethics and moral values.I was happy when the concerned authorities recently detained another artist who performed the dab dance move on stage, just as the well-known singer had done earlier. For readers who do not know what dabbing is, let me explain it. The dab dance move can be performed by raising your both arms up so that they go straight out from your shoulders, then bend one arm toward your body while keeping the other straight, with your head ducked in toward the bent...
