Researchers use drones to pilot a new tool to fight Malaria
CHEJU, Zanzibar — Scientists seeking a breakthrough in the fight against malaria have used drones to spray rice fields in Zanzibar — not with traditional pesticides but with a thin, non-toxic film. The fields are typical breeding grounds for the anopheles mosquito — the type that transmits malaria, which the United Nations says kills a young child every minute and causes 75 percent of all under five deaths.Ninety percent of all cases occur in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the World Health Organization. The researchers, led by Bart Knols from Radboud University in The Netherlands, plan to sample the larvae and the mosquitoes in the fields before, during and after spraying it with the silicone-based liquid, Aquatain AMF, to test its impact.Malawi has used drones to map mosquito...

China rolls out 5G services in race to narrow tech gap
BEIJING — China's three major state telecom operators rolled out 5G wireless technology on Thursday, as the country races to narrow its technology gap with the US amid a bruising trade war.China Mobile, the country's largest carrier, announced its 5G services were available in 50 cities — including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen — with packages starting from 128 yuan ($18) a month.Rivals China Telecom and China Unicom are also offering services at comparable prices in major cities, according to notices on their websites. The ultra-fast mobile internet service — which is 100 times faster than existing 4G networks — allows consumers to download full-length films within seconds, or use apps with virtual reality. The technology will also pave the way for driverless cars,...

Facebook agrees to pay UK fine over Cambridge Analytica scandal
LONDON — Facebook has agreed to pay a 500,000 pound ($644,000) fine for breaches of data protection law related to the harvesting of data by consultancy Cambridge Analytica, Britain's information rights regulator said on Wednesday.Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has faced questioning by US and EU lawmakers over how the political consultancy obtained the personal data of 87 million Facebook users from a researcher. The fine may be small for a company worth $540 billion, but it is the maximum the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) could issue and represents the first move by a regulator to punish Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The ICO issued the fine last year after it said data from at least 1 million British users had been among the information harvested by the...

Hong Kong students take protest to virtual world
HONG KONG — A group of Hong Kong students have developed a virtual reality game they hope will allow people to experience the anti-government demonstrations from the view of a "frontline protester".The short but detailed first-person game, demonstrated to Reuters in a shabby, high-rise industrial block, allows players to dodge tear gas, duck behind burning barriers and run from riot police."It allows you to experience what crisis the frontline protester might have been through," said Lam, a 30-year developer who covered her face and did not want to give her full name because she had participated in the often-illegal protests."That does not mean you will have to go out after playing the game. We hope people that fight for freedom will go out...

Facebook 'news tab' seeks to reboot its role with media
WASHINGTON — Facebook on Friday began rolling out its dedicated "news tab" with professionally produced content — the latest move by the social network to promote journalism and shed its reputation as a platform for misinformation. The tab, being tested with some US users, will be separate from a user's normal feed and include articles from partner news organizations. The mix of stories in Facebook News will be determined by algorithmic "personalization" based on an user's preferences and data, and by actual journalists choosing content."I've been talking to news publishers and journalists for a few years about how we can do more to support high quality journalism on Facebook," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said. The new tab is "dedicated...

BP to test technology to recycle plastic bottles again and again
LONDON — BP plans to build a $25 million pilot plant to test new technology the energy company says will allow plastic bottles and food packaging to be recycled again and again.Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, is one of the most widely recycled plastics. About 27 million tonnes of PET is used annually in packaging, with bottles accounting for around 23 million tons of that, BP said in a statement, citing data from consultancy Wood Mackenzie. However, only around 60 percent of PET used for bottles is recovered, with the vast majority recycled only once before being either buried in landfill or burnt as the current recycling process leaves a lot of impurities.BP said that its new recycling technology, named Infinia, can transform used PET plastics into brand-new plastic feedstock,...

Quantum leap in computing as scientists claim 'supremacy'
PARIS — Scientists claimed on Wednesday to have achieved a near-mythical state of computing in which a new generation of machine vastly outperforms the world's fastest super-computer, known as "quantum supremacy".A team of experts working on Google's Sycamore machine said their quantum system had executed a calculation in 200 seconds that would have taken a classic computer 10,000 years to complete.A rival team at IBM has already expressed skepticism about their claim. But if verified and harnessed, the Google device could make even the world's most powerful supercomputers — capable of performing a giddying 20,000 trillion calculations per second — look like an early 2000s flip-phone.Regular computers, even the fastest, function in binary fashion: they carry out...

Hover-taxi whizzes over Singapore, firm eyes Asian push
SINGAPORE — A drone-like flying taxi whirred over Singapore's waterfront on Tuesday, with the firm behind the test hoping the aircraft will revolutionize travel in traffic-choked Asian cities. The 18 propeller vehicle, developed by German firm Volocopter and with a pilot onboard during the test flight, took off from a promontory and flew for about two minutes and 30 seconds around the Marina Bay district.Heavy rains in the morning almost delayed the flight, but the skies cleared in time for the battery-operated, two-seater taxi to quietly fly past skyscrapers. While the hover-taxis — resembling small helicopters but powered by drone-like technology -- can fly autonomously, there was a pilot aboard during the test for safety reasons.Volocopter has already tested the aircraft in Dubai,...
