Religious education in Arab countries must be revised
BLURBReligious education in Arab countries needs reviewing and revising even though the relevant ministries in Arab countries have, since 9/11, worked on developing a systematic curriculum.Hatoon Al-FasiAl-RiyadhI recently participated in a show on BBC Arabic focusing on school curricula in Arab countries. We talked about religious discrimination and incitement to racial hatred. The panel could not cover all of the issues related to religious education in school. We, however, agreed that religious education in Arab countries needs reviewing and revising even though the relevant ministries in Arab countries have, since 9/11, worked on developing a systematic curriculum. It can probably be said that religious education within our schools encourages exclusion and hatred toward non-Muslims....

Yousuf Al-Mihaimeed
A Ramadan without maids
By Yousuf Al-MuhaimeedAl-JazirahWHEN the holy month of Ramadan approaches every year, markets across the Kingdom become busy with men and women engaged in large-scale shopping day and night. They purchase everything ahead of the fasting month, not only foodstuffs but also furniture and other household items.Families also look for maids to work for them throughout the holy month. As a result, the salaries of maids reach the peak in Ramadan. In view of the big demand for maids, a black market emerges with middlemen making huge amounts of money. Some housemaids demand as high as SR5,000 for working a single month. It looks like members of Saudi families do not want to engage in any tedious household chores during the holy month, including cooking and cleaning because they want only to relax,...

Traffic fines have become a nightmare
By Abdo KhalOkazPEOPLE these days have nothing else to discuss but the heavy traffic fines suffocating a large number of them. The dreams have become their only way out of the predicament of paying the fines.Because the pocket is empty, many people have resorted to rumors. They spread the news that the government has erased all the fines which would be doubled if not paid on time. The reports are so strong that some people regret to have hastily paid their fines. They wished that they have waited for some more time before queuing up at the ATMs.Now everyone with traffic fine is approaching the traffic department or checking the ATMs with the hope that he would find that the fines have been abolished. To come out of their impossible dreams, violators with fine tickets should realize that they...

Civil status issues of women
By Hala Al-QahtaniAl-WatanDURING the past 10 years the Saudi Divorce Initiative (SDI) has submitted 73 recommendations to the Shoura (Consultative) Council, demanding enactment of laws to protect the rights of women and children after divorce. The move was initiated by Prof. Haifa Khaled, whose brainchild was SDI, after winning support of the ministries that are assigned to implement divorce-related regulations. One of the most important recommendations was the issuance of a marriage contract at the time of marriage in order for the couple to keep of a copy of it. The initiative also called for the formation of a national association to take care of divorcees’ affairs. Recommendations include granting of a three-day leave for the divorced woman employee within the framework of Labor...

The trial of a minister
Favoritism and nepotism in appointments have become a common practice in all government departments. All charters and laws denounce such negative practices as it prevents capable people from reaching key government positions.By Saeed Alfarha Al-GhamdiAl-MadinaIT is the first time a committee is formed in Saudi Arabia for the trial of a minister who was removed from his position following corruption charges. The trial gives the minister an opportunity to vindicate himself of the accusations against him.The minister had allegedly misused his official powers to appoint his unqualified son in a government job. By making that appointment the minister has breached his oath of office as well as the confidence vested in him by the higher authorities as the minister of civil service. In this case we...

Powers of the Shoura Council
The council's discussions have played a key role in moving the stagnant waters particularly in recent years after the appointment of the women members.By Samar Al-MuqrenAl-JazirahWHENEVER I read a news item published under the title "Shoura Council approves" or Shoura Council" rejects, I get astonished why some people, including journalists, men of letters and other intellectuals, in the country are still ignorant of the council's powers and its modus operandi. These people must be aware that the council is just a consultative body that has no right to approve or reject anything. The rejection of the council of any issue simply means that the council has decided not to discuss it in its general assembly. It does not mean that the council has rejected the issue outright...

Before letting women drive
Khaled Al-SuleimanOkazIT seems that allowing women to drive is a matter of time only. It may happen faster than we expect. The question arises as to what are the preparations for this move which we should take other than issuing driving licenses to women and the anticipated overcrowding in the car showrooms in various parts of the Kingdom?Firstly: The number of expatriate drivers must be reduced. Driving licenses must be granted to certain expatriates who are vocational and good drivers. This is done in a number of countries. This also requires expediting the completion of the public transport system in all towns and cities.Secondly: Loopholes in the traffic safety measures have to be corrected.Marking the detours with blocks is only confusing the traffic flow and is a real threat to...

LVP--Human rights experts needed
We have a clear shortcoming in dealing with international organizations. We left them to seek their information from unqualified people, those who engage in double-dealing and others who harbor hatred against our country. As a result, these organizations come out with illogical reports that are totally against us.Human rights experts neededBy Samar Al-MuqrinAl-JazirahTHE best the Shoura Council has come out with this season is the report on the Kingdom’s compliance with international charters, conventions, treaties and agreements ratified by it. This ensued a Shoura Council’s study on the performance of the Human Rights Commission (HRC).The best thing in this report, truly, is the recommendation calling for producing Saudi staff with international experience in all human rights fields....

Issue alternative punishment for misdemeanors
AbdulazizAl-SuwayedRULER of Dubai Sheikh Muhammad Bin Rashid recently ordered three men who tortured a helpless cat to carry out community service for four hours a day at a zoo for three consecutive months. The three men were found guilty of feeding a cat to two dogs and capturing everything on video.I do not remember the last time a judge in the Kingdom issued an alternative punishment to prison, flogging or fines. In fact, Saudi courts have issued few alternative punishments. Frankly speaking, I cannot remember when they were made and in which court and region. I do know that people were very excited and happy when they read about alternative punishment.Such punishment is important and can lead to positive results. Young men commit most misdemeanors and sending them to prison leads to...
