Fees for non-Saudis at state schools
Al-JazirahCITIZENS have the right to a free education. It is illogical to provide a free education to non-Saudis and put them on equal footing with Saudis. I am not trying to discriminate against non-Saudis. However, we need to impose fees on non-Saudi students as most countries around the world impose fees on students who are not nationals of their countries.Over 1 million non-Saudi students study in our public schools. They have full access to school facilities and get free books. These high-quality services should be offered for an annual fee, something that would generate cash to develop the Kingdom’s education sector. This money could contribute to the budgets allocated to the Ministry of Education and increase non-oil revenue, especially since the Kingdom is working to diversify...

An expatriate worker with diabetes
Al-MadinahLAST Ramadan, a street cleaner turned to me after performing prayers at the mosque and said he felt severely dizzy and could not focus. I felt sorry for him as he was an old man. His medical insurance card had expired and he did not have any money because the company had not paid him his salary for the last three months.I drove him to a nearby hospital where he underwent a medical check-up. The results showed that he had Type 2 diabetes and that his sugar level was very high. The doctor explained to him that he needs to start taking medicine to avoid future complications.I drove him back to the neighborhood after buying him the medicine and asked him to follow the timings of when to take the medicine as prescribed by the doctor. After that, every time I met him inside the mosque...

Teaching our children how to save money
Al-HayatSOME education and sociology experts blame parents for not instilling the importance of saving money in their children’s minds. These experts believe that parents should explain to their children the difference between a current account and a savings account, and how to file a home finance application, etc.Money is a sensitive issue to parents as many of them tend not to explain to their children how to build a household budget, how to distribute income, how to set aside money for vacations or for buying a new car, and other things like that.Naturally, children will find it difficult to grasp some financial matters. However, we can explain these issues to our children using other methods. For example, parents could tell their children that they will buy them a bike, or send them...

Employment of Saudis in universities
Al-WatanOVER 80,000 faculty members work in Saudi universities. Of whom 32,000, or 40 percent, are non-Saudis. About 47,000 faculty members are males, with 21,000, or 44 percent, being non-Saudis, while female members number 33,000, of whom 11,000 (33 percent) are non-Saudis.In short, there are 32,000 foreign male and female faculty members in our universities, and the presence of some of these professors is essential and we are thankful for their remarkable contributions.I am not in a position to classify and compare the efficiency of non-Saudi university professors, but I would like to emphasize here the need to replace foreign faculty members with highly qualified Saudi graduates, many of whom have obtained doctoral degrees. I would like to present statistics, possibilities and the...

Causes and effects of growing divorce cases
Al-JazirahTHE present generation experiences many problems in marital relations between men and women thus increasing divorce cases. This situation threatens the very existence of family, which is the main social institution. An earlier article about the new Saudi family structure sparked a lengthy discussion among social media activists including Twitter followers. They discussed the issue of divorce and its different causes. The following were some of their comments:One tweet said the idea of holding marriage to control young men and women and make them act intelligently had destroyed the lives of many. “Our marriages have not changed and they remain as before despite society’s rapid changes,” said another while exploring the reasons for increasing cases of divorce and...

Savage parents
Al-MadinaSOME believe that various forms of torture and brutality are related only to certain species of predators or even some human species of criminals and terrorists who have lost their sense humanity and all forms of mercy and compassion and have become monsters trapped in human bodies. Some even went beyond these limits and became worse than monsters, who might still have some compassion and mercy. There are certain individuals; the community calls them fathers because they are married and had children and yet they know nothing of being a parent. Some of them did not stop at the level of child molestation, but amounted to torture and some of them were seduced by drugs to become killers not only assaulting, beating and abusing children, but even killing them. Some believe that the...

My working wife
MakkahMANY of us have wives who work. Sometimes, men know in advance before marriage that the women they wish to marry have work to go to. At other times, wives decide to find work after marriage to help their husbands provide for the family.I do not talk here about the right of women to work. This issue has been discussed many a time. However, I have noticed that some couples get divorced because the wife works. Sometimes things get out of hand and both the husband and wife get stubborn about work; the husband does not want his wife to go to work while the wife insists on her right to do so.The husband should not become stubborn about it and should think reasonably. After all, he had agreed to get married to a workingwoman and he has to bear the consequences of this decision. Besides, he...

Solar energy and oil dependence
Al-MadinaTHE latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is one of the most dependable global organizations, indicates that solar power will become the largest source of energy in the world by 2050.The agency has said the main reason for the wide use of solar power is the declining production cost, which means more countries and institutions would depend on it in the future.According to officials concerned with environment protection, the increased use of solar energy will reduce dependence on fossil fuel such as oil and coal, the use of which emits 37,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. This is a huge figure and is considered the main reason for global warming. The main reason for the growing use of solar energy is the falling cost of solar panels and the...

Sons and daughters of Saudi mothers married to non-Saudi fathers
Al-MadinaCITIZENSHIP is something that is based on the place where a person lives and belongs to. From a sociological perspective, it is a social relationship between an individual and a state wherein the individual pledges allegiance to the state in exchange for protection. These definitions clearly show that both male and female citizens are treated the same and there is no form of discrimination. However, Saudi men who are married to non-Saudi women seem to be discriminated against as far as the law is concerned. The same thing applies to Saudi women who are married to non-Saudi men. The children of these Saudis are also discriminated against. The sons and daughters of Saudi men who are married to non-Saudi women are regarded as Saudi citizens, regardless of whether they were born inside...

How to control inflation
Al-MadinaWE should prepare well for inflation, which has arrived at a time when the government has imposed and enforced fees on the dependents of expatriate workers as well as introduced Value Added Tax (VAT). This new tax will be enforced in a few months’ time. So many things have happened that have led to inflation. When taxes are imposed, prices automatically increase. Economists call it inflation. Nobody, including economists, can predict the volume of inflation for the simple reason that VAT extends to factories, production units, packaging processes, distribution, merchants and consumers. The effect is immediate and tangible across society.Starting in the beginning of September, all businesses and corporations are required to register on the website of the General Authority of Zakat...
