While we sleep, our army defends us
Al-MadinahAs a country, we are blessed with an army full of heroes who defend us whenever there is a need to do so, especially those personnel on our southern borders. These are people who sacrifice their lives for the security of the Kingdom and its people.I truly pray to God that they are able to return safely to their families proud of having defeated all of our enemies. They are true heroes who stay awake at night watching our enemies while the entire country sleeps. The least we can do for them is to pray to God that they remain safe and return home as soon as possible. We need to understand that it is not only the enemies abroad who wish to target the Kingdom, regardless of whether this is in the form of drugs or destroying our borders. There are even enemies within the Kingdom who...

Let’s admit it: We were unfair to women
OkazEVERY time I hear a senior official stressing the importance of women and the competence and high qualifications they have, I cannot help but wonder. I do not understand whether those officials did not recognize the power of women or whether they were surprised at their capabilities.Perhaps those officials felt guilty about underestimating Saudi women and now they want to make it up; therefore, they make statements every now and then about the rights of Saudi women and the important roles they play in society. We should all, including senior officials and parents, admit that we marginalized women in society for decades. On the very few occasions when women were granted some rights, other rights were taken away from them. Even when we acknowledged the fact that women were capable of many...

A Saudi woman’s misery
Al-MadinaTHE following is the story of a jobless Saudi woman. I must say that I was really shocked when I learned about her story. Her husband divorced after she gave birth to his four children. She refused to give up. She worked hard and earned a bachelor's degree in health services and hospital management. She even got a license from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties after passing the required examinations at the age of 38.However, health institutions in the country refused to employ her. She did not give up and she started searching for jobs like cashier. But the companies refused to hire her because of her age. She was jobless for five years and now she is 43.I cannot find a proper justification why the heath institutions refused to employ her. The excuse of age does not...

Criticizing the Shoura Council
Al-WatanWHENEVER I decide to ignore news related to the Shoura Council a new issue surfaces requiring special attention and response. I was shocked to hear that two Shoura members literally abused the media and other members for criticizing the council's performance. The Shoura cresident did not intervene when the two members attacked the media and rebuked other members. He was the only person authorized to interrupt and stop that verbal exchange of abuse in the corridors of the reputed body.In the meantime we were surprised to see a female member opening the session last Monday, reprimanding her colleagues at times and leveling accusations against the media at other times. The female member, who joined the council just eight months ago, abused other members for criticizing the...

Unified law for women hostels
Al-WatanAS a large number of women are forced to move away from their parents and close relatives either for study or work, many of them face different problems that cannot be imagined by people staying outside the walls of their houses.Let me start by explaining the various problems female students face at hostels. Many parents will not find any option except sending their daughters to other cities for higher studies. The university hostel will be the first and last choice for them to ensure safety and security of their daughters.By safety we mean the hostel should provide safety and protection to its inmates from potential dangers and address their life issues such as health problems and emergency situations. Parents will think that their daughter will find someone to console her and...

SMEs and economic growth
MakkahWHEN we discuss small and medium enterprises (SMEs), many interrelated ideas and concepts such as innovation, entrepreneurship, business incubation, training and rehabilitation come to fore. In the end we reach the conclusion that the most important challenges facing SMEs are finance, business accelerators, red tape and training. There may be other challenges as well. The relevant ministries and agencies in the Kingdom (Labor, Commerce and Investment, and the Small and Medium Enterprises Authority) are working on initiatives to address some of these challenges. These ministries have provided business incubators and accelerators as well as consultancy services to help establish enterprises in the Kingdom. It is true that funding is one of the main challenges of SMEs. The common notion...

Cemeteries and crematoriums
Al-RiyadhJAVA, which forms part of the Indonesian archipelago, is the most densely populated island in the world. Despite its small area, the volcano-dotted island lying between Sumatra and Bali is at the economic center of Indonesia and home to more than half of its people.Java has a population of over 145 million and most of them are Muslim. Therefore, it inevitably has a large number of cemeteries. I traveled to the island seven years ago and visited most of the places. Everywhere I went, I saw three things in common: cemeteries, villages and paddy fields. When I visited Bali, I did not see any cemetery because 93 percent of its people are Hindu. Hindus cremate dead bodies of their beloved ones and preserve the ash.I asked a hotel receptionist whether most Hindus cremated their dead, she...

Why the focus on car accidents involving women drivers?
OkazA few days ago, a video went viral on social media showing a man shooting his wife because she, according to him, dared to drive a car without his approval. This was, however, a big lie. The video is almost a year old and has nothing to do with women driving. This is not the only unauthentic message on social media relating to women driving. We also, recently, heard of two other accidents apparently caused by women drivers. Looking at the contents and comments, one would assume that it was only women drivers who were involved in car accidents. This is the case even though we hear on almost a daily basis about car accidents involving men.Highlighting car accidents involving women is nothing but some hopeless attempt to scare women so that they will not get behind the wheel. People who...

Why are there so many expat workers?
Okaz dailyThe number of expatriate workers in our country has reached 13 million. I am almost certain that they work as engineers, consultants, directors, deputy directors and laborers. Of course, they are from different countries.Sources told Okaz daily that there are five nationalities that dominate jobs in the Kingdom. There are 3 million Indian workers, 2.5 million Pakistani workers, 2.2 million Egyptian workers, 1.4 million Yemeni workers and 1.2 million Bangladeshi workers in the Kingdom. The total number of workers hailing from these five nationalities has reached 10.3 million while the official workforce survey indicates that the number of expatriate workers from all nationalities has reached 13 million. This proves that workers from these five nationalities control jobs in the...

Do Saudi families provide a good learning environment for their children?
Al-MadinahThe family plays a major role in a child’s performance at school and also in shaping a child’s personality and morals. On the other hand, the school has an important role to play, especially the teacher, but the role of the family is surely greater. When children are supported by their families, the positive effects can be clearly seen. For example, I am incapable of understanding why some fathers do not ask their children about school for the entire year but at the end of the year get furious because their children do not get good grades. Some parents do not even bother to ask about their children’s friends and who they spend their time with. They also become angry when they are told that their child was in a fight or in trouble at school.Nowadays, we find that most...
