Why some women fear aging?
Al-Watan newspaperTWO questions fuel the fire in women: What is your weight; and how old are you? Only courageous women can answer the two questions. But does any woman require boldness to disclose her real age? These questions may seem normal to a man and he will be giving spontaneous answers, but most iconic women who shine in the media often express their reservations when they face such questions. So let’s discuss the reasons that often encourage women to fight aging and evade age-related questions? There is nothing wrong in asking these questions. On the other hand, a woman's refusal to disclose her age may reveal many other things about her. Most women consider the question about their weight quite embarrassing as the matter is directly linked to their health and it exposes their...

Bribery in the form of gifts
Al-Watan newspaperAN Asian agent of a Saudi contractor came to my office while I was working in a hospital in the region as his company wanted to win the hospital’s operation contract. Since the company’s meeting with contractors, the man seems to have pledged that he would do everything possible to win the golden deal. The hospital management had explained to the contracting company that the specifications of the electronic system they have presented did not match the hospital’s requirements. But, two days after the company's meeting with contractors, I saw an Asian sitting in my office confidently without my permission. When asked why he entered the office, he said to me he was staying close to the hospital and thought of bringing some sandwiches and coffee to have breakfast with...

Land scams worth millions
Al-Madina newspaperABOUT seven months ago, Al-Eqtisadiah business daily published a piece of news about the Ministry of Justice canceling the title deed for a plot of land measuring 35 million square meters in Najran. The plot was returned to the state after it was proved that the land was illegally occupied by private individuals in violation of land regulations in the country. The report also mentioned that the minister of justice issued the decision to cancel the deed after looking into an appeal by a court in Asir province. The deed was annulled because the plot was public owned and the deed was issued by way of a direct order, which contravened a royal decree in this regard. This week the Makkah newspaper published another report saying the Ministry of Justice canceled illegal title...

Problems surrounding housing loans
Makkah NewspaperTHE ongoing depression in the real estate sector is good because it directly contributes to lowering land prices and construction costs thus enabling citizens to build their dream homes. At the same time, the low demand and accumulation of real estate products will become difficult problems in the future, not to mention other consequences. The Housing Ministry and the Real Estate Development Fund have been making continuous efforts to ensure enough supply of housing products. Since the beginning of this year, the ministry has been announcing about 15,000 products every month, but no clarifications have been made regarding the response to these offers. It seems the demand for these offers was weak, especially because of the tough conditions set by banks that finance housing...

We need to reduce pressure in the workplace
Al-Madinah NewspaperThe head of a municipal office in Al-Baha was recently shot and killed by an employee who then committed suicide by shooting himself. It was a heinous and painful crime, and took place inside a government office that is responsible for municipal affairs. How a situation like this could come to pass cannot be understood. Eyewitnesses said the killer and the victim were both of good character.I worked in a government agency for a very long time. I can say, based on my experience, that the heads of department and directors as well as employees need to undergo courses that will help them get along with their staff better. This will help improve the work environment. These courses will help senior staff be more flexible with their subordinates.Heads of department should not...

‘Would you let your sister or mother do it?’
Al-Jazirah Newspaper“Would you let your sister or mother do it?” This is a question that we have frequently heard for the last four decades. When radio and TV were introduced into the Kingdom, many people were against them. If you argued with them, they would ask: “Would you let your sister or mother do it?” In other words, would you let them listen to the radio and watch TV? The question today is: “Would you marry a woman who drives a car or goes to the stadium to watch football matches?”Soon the question might be: “Would you marry a girl who goes to the cinema?” All of these questions revolve around men’s fear of women’s behavior or conduct and their suspicion of what women do. Islam has granted women many rights but tradition deprives women from seeing these rights...

Punish men who harass women!
Al-Jazirah daily NewspaperI once saw an interview of a well-known Christian female television presenter with Sheikh Luai Al-Zoabi from Syria. The presenter had covered her hair in respect for the sheikh but she was shocked that the sheikh did not look at her and kept looking down throughout the interview. When she asked him why, he said that religion ordered men to keep their sight away from women who do not cover their hair. This interview came to my mind when I read the statement of another Muslim sheikh who insisted that women invite harassment. In his opinion, he believes that women cause men to harass them when they do not cover themselves. He even called upon families to insure that their daughters covered up in order to avoid harassment.Surprisingly, he did not hold men accountable...

Al-Kandarah: The capital of Jeddah
Al-Bilad NewspaperAl-Kandarah district in Jeddah is, according to some, named after the condor – a large predatory bird native to the US that can weigh up to 13 kilograms.Other historical accounts claim that the word comes from the Turkish word for shoes. It is said that the Turks were the first to give the neighborhood this name because it looked like a shoe on the city’s map. Another historical account claims that the name is derived from the Turkish word for bloodbath. It is said that during the Turkish time there was a battle in the neighborhood in which much blood was spilt. Some historians claim that the name is derived from the name of Sheikh Muhammad Bin Omrah Al-Kenaidri, the tribal chief of Al-Kanadrah tribe who lived in the neighborhood in the 1940s. At the time, the...

Is it permissible to kill stray dogs?
Okaz daily NewspaperSeveral videos were recently posted on social media showing dogs lying dead in the street after being poisoned. The sight was disgusting. It reminds me of the young Saudi who captured himself on video shooting cats in the street. He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment and a SR20,000 fine. The late Sheikh Bin Baz was once asked about giving poison to dogs to kill them. He said: “It is impermissible to kill harmless dogs. However, rabid dogs should be killed.” Also, in another fatwa, he said: “It is not permissible to kill dogs just because they cause noise or bark a lot. The mass killing of dogs is not permissible as well because the Prophet (peace be upon him) only permitted the killing of rabid dogs.”Every week, we read about accidents that happen on highways...

Only Saudis should be home delivery workers
Al-Riyadh daily NewspaperI recently saw a disgusting video of a home delivery worker who was engaging in unhygienic practices while delivering food to a customer. He purposely captured himself on video as if he was enjoying it. This video, which was posted on social media websites, caused many to bring up the issue of the need for the Saudization of delivery worker jobs. Many restaurants hire expatriate workers to deliver food. Some of those workers are in violation of residency regulations. They have frequently been reported to engage in similar unhygienic practices.Expatriate workers who do these jobs should be replaced by Saudis. The concerned authorities should issue orders to Saudize these jobs today, perhaps this can be done in conjunction with Uber and Careem which allow the person...
