The high price of loyalty
Naresh Goyal transformed Indian air travel. When it began operations in 1993, his Jet Airways provided an efficient and quality alternative to the lackluster state carrier Air India. Like other entrepreneurs such as Sunil Mittal, Narayana Murthy and Subhash Chandra who were all first movers when the country opened up the economy to the private sector, Goyal became a well-regarded billionaire. Through his holding company Tail Winds he owned a majority stake in Jet Airways. In 2013 he sold for $380 million a 24 percent share in Jet to Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways. It seemed an important alliance which generated confidence in his airline a year after his local rival Kingfisher Airlines collapsed with debts of $1.1 billion. But in 2007 Goyal had revived a deal to take over rival Sahara...

Spain’s difficult election outcome
Spaniards demonstrated on Sunday that they are every bit as divided as other European countries where racist right-wing parties have been winning popular support. Although the outgoing socialist party of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez won the largest share of the vote, he must once again have to work in a coalition with the left-wing Podemos party but will still be one vote short of a parliamentary majority. Unless he is prepared to try a minority government with the risk of losing a confidence vote over a key issue, Sanchez may need to secure the support of a regional party.Essentially this means either Basque or Catalan legislators, both of whom have separatist agendas, with the Catalans effectively in open revolt against control from Madrid. Of particular concern has to be the appearance...

Lanka still lurching
The 15 people killed, including six children in Sri Lanka on Friday when suspected Islamist militants blew themselves up in a police raid, shows that the country is far from out of the woods following last week’s bomb attacks that killed at least 250 people.Security forces have carried out raids across the country since the attacks, detaining 80 so far and hunting for 70 others but officials say there are 130 suspects linked to Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS) still at large in the country. Authorities have warned there could be more attacks targeting religious centers. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities have been attempting to root out “sleeper” cells that could initiate another round of attacks. This puts paid to Donald Trump’s assertion that Daesh has been defeated. They might have...

Palestinians buffeted from all sides
The shooting of a blindfolded and handcuffed Palestinian teenager by an Israeli soldier is the kind of incident in the occupied territories seen, read and heard time and time again. It also comes when the US-sponsored deal that is supposed to bring an end to the Palestinian-Israeli problem is close to being unveiled, adding what will probably be another insult to the Palestinians along with the injury.Photos and video from the scene from residents of the Palestinian village of Tuqu’ show 15-year-old Osama Al-Badan, with his hands bound behind his back, trying to run away from at least four Israeli soldiers who are standing nearby. The boy’s father said Al-Badan was shot once in each leg with a pistol - for throwing stones.Al-Badan was eventually taken to a nearby clinic for medical...

From a terror state to a state of terror
PRESIDENT Trump was not as crass as his predecessor George W. Bush who after US-led forces had overthrown Iraq’s Saddam Hussain, triumphantly pronounced the fatally-flawed words “Mission Accomplished”. But there was nevertheless a sense of “Job done” when Trump welcomed the seizure of the last bit of territory held by Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS). Long opposed to US involvement in the Middle East, it is clear the president is under the grievous misapprehension that by empowering the Zionist government of Benjamin Netanyahu, he can largely end American involvement in the Middle East and rely on Israel as a US proxy. The glaring failings in this US isolationism are obviously lost on Trump. Nor does his understanding of the nature of the international terror threat seem...

Fighting in Tripoli
The battle for the Libyan capital Tripoli is currently stalled. Some 300 people have died and more than 1,000 have been injured. According to the World Heath Organization at least 20 of the dead are civilians caught up in crossfire or hit by apparently random shelling.Even one civilian casualty in such fighting is one too many but continued street fighting suggests more innocents will be caught up in the violence. The Libyan National Army (LNA) led by General Khalifa Haftar, which is seeking to wrest Tripoli from the lawless militias that have effectively run it since the Muslim Brotherhood coup in 2014, protests it is doing all it can to minimize civilian casualties. However, such claims from any side in this conflict need to be viewed in context. Training and discipline among the LNA is...

A comedian no more
For Ukraine’s president-elect Volodymyr Zelensky the laughter stops now. This popular TV comedian who shot to fame playing a fictional president now has the job for real. Moreover, he won Sunday’s election with an astonishing 73 percent of the popular vote. If he is wise, he probably already realizes that having such a massive proportion of the electorate place their faith in him is no laughing matter. There can be no doubt that what the voters rejected was the payola, corruption and cronyism that has deformed Ukrainian politics since the country left the former Soviet Union in 1991. Zelensky’s win was surely based on the belief that he could reprise his TV role in the series “Servant of the People” where he played an honest president who clamped down on a deeply criminal...

Sri Lankans must unite against terror
The appalling carnage in Sri Lanka has shocked the world. This beautiful island has spent the last 10 years struggling to recover from the decades of unrelenting violence brought about by the Tamil Tiger rebellion. It might have been hoped the country could be enjoying a revival of its important tourist trade. The Sunday blasts that killed some 300 innocents and maimed at least 500 more have shattered those expectations. After an initial silence, during which there were also no gloating terrorist claims of responsibility, the authorities blamed an obscure local Jihadist group, the National Thowheed Jamath. At least a score of suspects have already been arrested. If this gang did indeed perpetrate these foul crimes, then there is evidence to suggest that they were not acting alone. Sri...

There was no collusion
US Special Counsel Robert Mueller has effectively cleared President Donald Trump and his 2016 campaign of collusion with Russia. While the report states that Russians clearly worked to elect Trump and that the Trump campaign viewed the release of hacked Democratic material by the Russians as beneficial, the investigation “did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities”. Indeed, no American was indicted in the special counsel investigation for collusion, coordination or conspiracy.By and large, then, Americans should be relieved that their president is not some sort of Russian agent. Despite identifying 10 troubling episodes that could be defined as acts of obstruction, Mueller could not...

Mohamed Salah
We need more people like Mohamed Salah
Gracing the cover of Time is a considerable feat. Landing in the venerable magazine for being one of the world’s 100 most influential people is an accomplishment like few others. And being an Arab and a Muslim achieving this feat is an honor that should make the people who share this faith and ethnicity immensely proud. It is a triumph not just of football star Mohamed Salah but of all people of the region.Salah made it on the cover of Time largely because of his prowess on the field. His global popularity surged last year when he enjoyed a breakthrough season with Liverpool, scoring 44 goals in the 2017-18 campaign and helping the English Premier League side reach the Champions League final. While goals haven’t flowed as freely for the Egyptian this campaign, the 26-year-old is still...
