JEDDAH — The government of New Zealand made prominent Jeddah-based businessman Sheikh Abdul Raouf Abu Zinadah, honorary consul of New Zealand, an honorary member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, at a ceremony held at the Park Hyatt Hotel on Tuesday night.



He was presented with an insignia denoting his new title. Speaking on the occasion, New Zealand Ambassador Rod Harris said this was an acknowledgment of Abu Zinadah’s valuable contribution in fostering close relations between the countries.



He said Abu Zinadah has been the longest serving honorary consul of New Zealand.



Harris praised the businessman’s humanitarian qualities. Speaking to Saudi Gazette, Abu Zinadah said: “I would like to thank the Government of New Zealand for felicitating me with the insignia and Order of Merit, which is considered one of the biggest awards in New Zealand. “It has been a very good relationship between the two countries. There has been a growth in business between the two countries in the last few years that was worth 680 million dollars between us.



“The award was given to me by Queen Elizabeth II, who is also the head of the Commonwealth.



“I will try to get the ties more stronger between the two countries very soon.



“New Zealand is a very important country. We have around 13,000 Saudis studying in New Zealand presently. We will be increasing their strength by sending more Saudis to study there.



“Lastly I would also like to thank Mr. John Key, prime minister of New Zealand and Queen Elizabeth II for honoring me with the insignia and Order of Merit.”



The event was attended by several prominent businessmen and members of Abu Zinadah’s family.
