Elon Musk announces launch of new political party amid fallout with Trump

July 06, 2025

WASHINGTON — Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party in the United States, weeks after a high-profile and public break with President Donald Trump.

Posting on his social media platform X, the billionaire tech mogul unveiled the "America Party," describing it as an alternative to the entrenched two-party system. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote, referencing an earlier user poll he conducted on the platform. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk accused both Democrats and Republicans of contributing to national decline, stating: “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”

Despite the declaration, it remains unclear whether the America Party has been officially registered with the Federal Election Commission. Musk has also yet to announce leadership details, a party platform, or plans to field candidates.

The move follows Musk’s dramatic fallout with Trump, whom he once strongly supported. After backing the Republican leader’s 2024 re-election bid with $250 million in campaign funding, Musk was appointed to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with identifying sweeping federal budget cuts.

The relationship soured in May when Musk resigned from the role and publicly criticized Trump’s economic policies—particularly a massive tax-and-spending bill recently signed into law. Musk argued that the legislation, which the president dubbed his “big, beautiful bill,” would dangerously inflate the federal deficit. Estimates suggest the package could add more than $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

As of Saturday, no filings for the America Party had appeared on the FEC's public database. — Agencies
