King approves awarding King Abdulaziz Medal to 200 citizens for organ donation

RIYADH — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman has approved the awarding of the King Abdulaziz Medal of Third Class to 200 Saudi men and women for donating one of their major organs, whether from a living or brain-dead person.

The King’s decision comes in the wake of an increase in the number of organ donors among the Saudi citizens. According to a recent report of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT), a total of 1,706 people had donated their organs during the year in 2024, up 4.9 percent compared to 2023. These included 1,284 kidney transplants and 422 liver transplants.

The report revealed that the number of people who expressed, through the Tawakkalna app, their wish to donate their organs after death reached 540,346. Last year, 393 organs were transplanted from deceased donors, and this shows an increase of 12.3 percent.
