BOGOTA — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Friday that her government has filed a lawsuit against Google over the tech company’s decision to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America” on its U.S.-based mapping platform.

Speaking during a press briefing at the National Palace in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said the Mexican government had previously raised objections with Google, but the concerns went unaddressed.

"Google has already been sued. A preliminary ruling has been issued, and we are currently awaiting the outcome," she said.

Sheinbaum clarified that Mexico does not object to the use of the name “Gulf of America” for areas adjacent to U.S. shores, but said the entire body of water cannot be labeled that way.

"This is an international issue," she said. "Our request is that Google apply the name 'Gulf of America' only to the areas corresponding to U.S. territory, and use 'Gulf of Mexico' for the regions bordering Mexico and Cuba."

The name change has stirred diplomatic sensitivities, though Sheinbaum confirmed it had not been raised in recent phone calls with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump issued an executive order on January 20 instructing federal agencies and U.S.-based platforms to refer to the Gulf as the “Gulf of America.” Google followed with an announcement on February 11 confirming the implementation of the change across its mapping services. — Agencies
