WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, underwent hip replacement surgery on Saturday at the U.S. military’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany following a fall during an event in Luxembourg.

Pelosi, who was in Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, tripped and fractured her hip at the event.

She was initially treated at a hospital in Luxembourg before being transferred to the U.S. military hospital for surgery.

Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi, confirmed in a statement that the California Democrat is "well on the mend" and expressed her gratitude to the medical staff in both Luxembourg and Germany for their excellent care.

During the trip, Pelosi was joined by several lawmakers, including Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who shared a photo on social media of himself holding hands with Pelosi at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg.

McCaul extended his prayers for Pelosi’s recovery, wishing her a speedy return to health.

Pelosi, who has represented her San Francisco district since 1987, served as Speaker of the House twice before stepping down from her leadership position two years ago.

She remains an active member of Congress, having been reelected in November. — Agencies
