Saudi Gazette report

RIYADH — Bader Al-Qahtani, a Saudi scholarship medical student, has been successful in restoring the eyesight of an elderly Canadian woman through a corneal transplant at the University of Ottawa Hospital.

Al-Qahtani said in a video clip that the Canadian patient, aged over 70 years, had lost sight years ago in one of her eyes due to severe corneal ulcers.

“The patient, who came to the emergency room of the hospital a few months ago, was suffering from microbial ulcers in the other eye, which led to her losing sight in both eyes,” he said.

Al-Qahtani continued: “The emergency team contacted me by virtue of my specialization in performing surgeries such as corneal transplantation, vision correction operations, and cataract surgeries.

“After examining the case, a specific treatment plan was worked out and corneal transplantation surgery was performed using the amino membrane to help the cornea heal faster, and the patient was followed up on until she fully recovered her sight,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad Al-Jabreen, charge de affaires at the Saudi mission, received Bader Al-Qahtani and appreciated him for his excellence in medical work and his accuracy in performing his duties as a doctor, which saved the Canadian patient from blindness.

The Saudi mission said on its official account that this achievement was appreciated by the hospital administration and the patient’s family.

There has been a tremendous response from Twitteratis and other social media users praising Dr. Al-Qahtani for the achievement. They hailed him as an ideal model for scholarship students.
