Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 to qualify for Round of 16 at World Cup

DOHA — Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 in Group H on Monday to qualify for the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a yellow card in the sixth minute at Lusail Stadium.

Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez flicked a header just over the bar in the 12th minute.



Gimenez deflected Joao Felix's shot to the corner in the 16th minute.

Bentancur beat several Portuguese defenders, but his effort on goal was saved by goalie Diogo Costa in the 32nd minute.

Portugal's Ruben Neves was booked with a yellow card by the referee in the 38th minute.

Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes had to be subbed off in the 42nd minute due to an injury and Raphael Guerreiro got into the match.



Mathias Olivera of Uruguay was shown a yellow card by the referee in the 44th minute, and the first half ended with a goalless draw.

The match was stopped as a fan ran onto the pitch in the 52nd minute. Just one minute later, Joao Felix wasted a good chance for Portugal in front of the opposition goal.

But Bruno Fernandes' shot from outside the box gave Portugal the lead in the 54th minute.

Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez placed a slow shot in the 60th minute but it was saved by Costa.

Uruguay footballer Maximiliano Gomez's shot came back from Portugal’s crossbar in the 75th minute.

Felix was shown a yellow card in the 77th minute.

An attempt by Uruguay forward Luis Suarez missed the goal by inches in the 78th minute.

Portugal goalie Costa made another important save against Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the 79th minute.

Portugal’s Ruben Dias was given a yellow card in the 89th minute.

Fernandes wasted his chance to make a hat-trick in the 98th minute as Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet blocked his close-range shot. One minute later, he missed another chance by aiming his shot to the left bottom corner of the crossbar and the match ended 2-0.
