NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday unveiled the logo, theme and website of India’s G20 presidency. The logo bears a lotus and the message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One Earth, One Family, One Future’.

Speaking at the launch via video conferencing, the prime minister said the lotus is a symbol of hope.

“The world is going through the after-effects of a disruptive once-in-a-century pandemic, conflicts and lot of economic uncertainty. The symbol of the lotus in the G20 logo is a representation of hope in these times. No matter how adverse the circumstances, the lotus still blooms,” Modi said.

“India will chair the G20 from Dec. 1. This is a historic moment for India. On this occasion, I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the countrymen,” Modi said.

“‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ is the signature of India’s compassion for the world. Lotus portrays the cultural heritage and faith of India in bringing the world together. We had asked the countrymen for their valuable suggestions for the logo. Today, those suggestions are becoming the face of such a big global event,” he added.

The prime minister said the G20 presidency offers India an opportunity to contribute to the global agenda. “We have seen dark days in the shackles of colonialism. Despite several challenges, India turned every hard experience into its strength,” the prime minister said.

Guided by the vision of the prime minister, the foreign policy of India has been evolving to undertake leadership roles on the global stage. In a significant step in this direction, India will assume the presidency of the G20 from the current chair Indonesia.

Italy and Indonesia, along with India, are part of the G20 troika: past, present and incoming presidencies. During the G20 Presidency, India will hold about 200 meetings in 32 different sectors in multiple locations across India.

The G20 Summit to be held next year would be one of the most high-profile international gatherings to be hosted by India.

Collectively, the member nations represent around 90 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), 80 percent of the world’s economic output, two-thirds of global population and three-quarters of international trade. — Agencies
