RIYADH — Saudi authorities have arrested an Egyptian expatriate in Wadi Al-Dawasir on charges of assaulting a child with disabilities after a video footage of the incident was circulated online.

Riyadh region's police said the man was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution to take legal action against him.

Saudi Arabia’s Attorney General Sheikh Saud Al-Muajab ordered on Thursday to quickly arrest the man who appeared in a video clip, which was being circulated on social media. The footage showed the man assaulting a child in Wadi Al-Dawasir governorate in the Riyadh province.

An official source at the Public Prosecution stated that its monitoring center had filed a complaint regarding the circulation of the content on social media, including the assault of a child by an individual.

An arrest warrant was issued on the basis of the provisions of the Criminal Procedures Law, he said, adding that there are provisions in the law to refer such cases to the Public Prosecution for investigation, as well as to take penal measures and plead the court to award the most severe penalties for the crime.

He pointed out that the penal systems guarantee high level of protection for the victimized child, and that the special prosecution in this case directed that the victim shall undergo psychological rehabilitation. — SG
