KAUST showcases innovative research at 2022 IPTC

February 21, 2022

THUWAL — Two research centers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) are attending the 2022 International Petroleum Technology conference in Riyadh from Feb.21 to 23.

The University's Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC) and Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center (ANPERC) will be participating with a booth, poster sessions and talks.

One of the highlights of CCRC’s presentations will be a talk on cryogenic carbon capture aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. The innovative process involves freezing greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants.

A team of KAUST researchers is devising a technique for cooling carbon dioxide when fossil fuels are combusted to produce electricity.

Once in a solid or ‘dry ice’ form, the pollutant can be stowed underground or used to make chemicals and other products.

For its part, ANPERC will present an interesting array of topics including discussing geothermal energy systems that can be used in conjunction with Carbon Capture, Utilization, Sequestration (CCUS) and gravity-assisted carbon dioxide storage and enhanced oil recovery. — SG
