Jaishankar, Shoukry meet on sidelines of UNGA

NEW YORK — Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met on Tuesday with his Indian counterpart, Dr. Subramaniam Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the 76th session of UN General Assembly currently being held in New York.

Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting: “Reflecting on a longstanding friendship. An open and positive meeting with FM Sameh Shoukry of Egypt.”

“Agreed to take forward our bilateral cooperation. Exchanged views on the GERD issue and Afghanistan,” he wrote in another tweet.

The two ministers discussed a number of issues of common interest, as well as relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them in various fields, official spokesperson of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez said.

Dr. Jaishankar held some of the expected 15 bilateral meetings on the sidelines of UNGA Tuesday. It included meetings with Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

In a series of tweets, Dr. Jaishankar expressed delight at the outcome of the meetings.

“Met our Quad partner Australia. Took forward strategic conversations with FM Marise Payne from our last meeting. Was apprised of recent developments in the Indo-Pacific.”

He then wrote about his meeting with Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, “Happy to meet FM G. Landsbergis of Lithuania. Agreed to expand our bilateral contacts. Exchanged views on our respective regions.”

Following his discussions with Foreign Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn of Vietnam, he tweeted, “ A productive meeting with FM Bui Thanh Son of Vietnam. Discussed our multidimensional bilateral cooperation. Exchanged views on regional and common interest.”

And on his meeting with the Indonesia foreign minister Retno Marsudi, Jaishankar tweeted: “A good meeting with a key ASEAN partner. Discussed regional developments with FM of Indonesia. Shared interests and common perspectives drive our strong cooperation.”

Meanwhile, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra met Tuesday with his Jordanian counterpart Dr. Ayman Al-Safadi, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, ways to enhance them and regional and international issues, foremost of which is the Palestinian issue. — Agencies
