Climate change protesters block bridge in London

August 31, 2021

LONDON — The “Extension Rebellion” organized a demonstration in which they demanded that governments and companies take urgent action to curb climate change.

They protested by sitting on the ground, which brought traffic to a standstill, at the Tower Bridge in London, on Monday.

The Extension Rebellion is targeting the London financial district near Tower Bridge with a series of protests lasting two weeks.

The Extension Rebellion has previously rallied outside the Bank of England, the Guildhall, and Paternoster Square before rallying in front of the Tower Bridge in London.

The group accuses the financial industry of financing climate change, particularly by providing money to fossil fuel companies.

About 200 protesters participated in the demonstration at the northern end of the bridge, while groups of police tried to prevent others from joining them, according the Reuters photographer that witnessed the rally.

The police later said that the bridge was later reopened, and 11 people were arrested in connection with the group's protests, bringing the total number of arrests since the demonstrations began on (Aug. 22) to 367 arrests. — Agencies
