LONDON — People who resort to racial abuse of football players will not be allowed to attend matches in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday.

“You will not be going to the match — no ifs, no buts,” the prime minister told abusive supporters, in the House of Commons, after pressure from the opposition Labour to adopt the motion.

Earlier, Johnson had outlined to parliament the measures he was taking to try to tackle the online abuse after hosting the heads of social media companies at his Downing Street residence on Tuesday.

The UK prime minister said the government is "taking practical steps to ensure that the football banning order regime is changed".

"I repeat that I utterly condemn and abhor the racist outpourings that we saw on Sunday night," Johnson said, referring to the racist abuse on social media directed at England stars Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.

The trio missed their spot-kicks in England's penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley on Sunday. — Agencies
