Saudi Gazette report

RIYADH — Riyadh’s “Steel Woman Center” emerged champions, with a score of 456 points, in the women’s weightlifting championship held for the first time in the Kingdom’s history.

A total of 35 weightlifters, representing nine gym and fitness centers, participated in the championship, which concluded at Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium here.

Intervalplus Center Riyadh came second with 453 points while MILOS GYM came third with 432 points. It was followed by Ittihad Center Riyadh, Ittihad Center Jazan, Intervalplus Jeddah, Fit Action, EVOX, and FIT FOREVER FITNESS in that order.

The championship was held with the full attendance and follow-up of Fauzia Hawbani, board member of the Saudi Arabian Weightlifting Federation and head of its Women’s Committee.

She praised the excellent level of performance made by the female weightlifters in the championship, saying that this manifests the outstanding base and a bright future for the sport of weightlifting.

Despite the short period for preparations after the announcement of the championship, the turnout was more than amazing, Hawbani said.

“My happiness is indescribable to see the heroines who competed with full force and presented a wonderful image of the Saudi women with the will and determination that nobody can stop,” she added.
