February 27, 2021

RIYADH — Britain’s Sam Bird of the Jaguar team extended his win record to become Formula E's first world champion after winning the second Diriyah E-Prix night race that ended under a red-flag on Saturday.

The Brit emerged on top of a race-long duel with Envision Virgin’s pole-sitter Robin Frijns that was brought to an early conclusion by an accident that led to Alex Lynn being hospitalized.

Formula E announced that Mahindra driver Lynn — whose car ended up upside down — had been taken to hospital for evaluation.

Mahindra Racing team confirmed: “Following his accident Alex Lynn is conscious, talking and on his way to hospital for check ups.”

Behind the leaders, two-time FE champion Jean-Eric Vergne completed the podium ahead of DS Techeetah teammate and reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa after the duo clashed while fighting for position.

Nick Cassidy took fifth place in the second Virgin car, with Sergio Sette Camara heading Dragon-Penske teammate Nico Muller home in what marked a strong result for the American squad.

Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy prime minister and minister of defense, attended the second race of the Diriyah Formula E Race 2021.

The event is being held at Diriyah for the third consecutive year and marks the opening of the seventh season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

On arrival to the race track, the Crown Prince was received by Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz Bin Turki Al-Faisal. — SG
