LONDON — As many as 90.1 million (90,188,197) people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,936,828 have died, according to a worldodometer tally. It reported that there have been 64,586,084 cases of global recoveries.

Coronavirus is continuing its spread across the world with over 90 million confirmed cases in 218 countries and more than 1.93 million deaths. The virus is surging in many regions and countries that had apparent success in suppressing initial outbreaks are also seeing infections rise again.

The US recorded Saturday 283,204 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours as the confirmed cases nation-wide crossed 26 million. It also recorded 3,456 virus-related deaths according to Johns Hopkins University.

The tally showed that the confirmed cases nationwide reached 21,862,773 and at least 368,773 deaths across US, with the country remaining the world’s worst hit by the pandemic.

Furthermore there were a record 131,889 people currently hospitalized for coronavirus in the US, according to COVID Tracking Project. The US ranks first globally in the number of coronavirus cases and deaths.

India and Brazil have the second and third highest case tallies, recording some 10.3 and 7.7 million cases respectively. Infections have been reported in more than 218 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

Daily cases have now fallen in many European countries after steep rises in October. Lockdowns and other restrictions were reintroduced in some of the worst-affected regions to help bring numbers down.

In London, Britain said that the death toll from coronavirus has risen by 1,035 to 80,868, the Department of Health and Social Care said on Saturday. As many as 59,937 more lab-confirmed cases raised the country’s overall count to more than three million, according to the department’s daily update.

In Moscow, Russia reported 22,851 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 3,401,954 after it crossed the 3.37 million mark. Russia's coronavirus crisis center said 456 coronavirus patients had died in the last 24 hours and the overall national coronavirus death toll was at 61,837.

They added 24,080 people recovered from the virus, raising the total number of recoveries to 2,778,837. The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have spread to Russia on Jan. 31, 2020 when two Chinese citizens in Tyumen (Siberia) and Chita (Russia Far east) tested positive for the virus.

In Berlin, German health authorities reported on Sunday 465 deaths and 16,362 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases said the country’s death toll increased to 40,343 cases and the total confirmed cases those to 1,908,527.

Germany responded to the second wave of the deadly pandemic by shutting hospitality businesses as well as leisure and sports facilities. Schools and non-essential shops have, however, remained open.

In Paris, France recorded 20,177 new, confirmed COVID-19 cases and 171 more deaths from the virus in the last 24 hours, Reuters cited data from the country's health ministry as showing.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in France stands at 2,767,312, while the total number of deaths stands at 67,599. France has the seventh-biggest COVID-19 death toll in the world.

In Rome, Italy’s death toll from the coronavirus outbreak hit 78,394 on Saturday in the past 24 hours, Health Ministry data showed. Some 19,976 new cases were logged in the same period to raise the total in one of the world’s worst-affected countries to 2,258,000, according to government figures. It noted 17,040 people recovered from the virus in the past day, taking the tally to more than 1,600,000 recoveries since the outbreak of the pandemic.

In Brussels, total infections of coronavirus cases in Belgium on Sunday increased to 662,694 with 1,991 new infections reported by Belgian health authorities. They reported 46 more deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours raising the total death toll to 20,038.

In Amsterdam, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment Saturday reported that 7,383 new coronavirus cases were reported in the Netherlands raising the total number of infections to 866,315. Also around 135 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours raising the total deaths from COVID-19 to 12,314, said the institute.

Meanwhile, health authorities of five eastern European including Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia have recorded 34,768 new cases of COVID-19 and 774 deaths in the last 24-hours.

Greece's Health authorities gave a statement saying 10,548 cases and 438 deaths have been recorded in recent 24-hours, summing up the totals to 1,376,389 cases and 31,011 deaths.

A statement by the Czech health authorities has also revealed 13,029 new cases recorded (822,716 in total), while deaths have amounted to 12,978 with 88 recently recorded.

In Romania, health authorities logs show 6,682,202 cases in total (recently 4,403) while the 86 recent deaths amount the total to 16,592. Hungarian health authorities in the last 24-hours recorded 2,716 new cases and 114 deaths related to the virus which put the total number of cases at 340,459 and 10,554 deaths.

Around 205,236 cases in total and 2,836 deaths of logged data was revealed in a recent statement by the Slovakian Health officials, with recent records of 4,072 cases and 48 deaths.

WHO has called on continued efforts as this new wave begins emerging, especially following these recent logs in the Eastern bloc, as Europe witnesses a serious spike in COVID-19 cases. Late December, Europe has been undergoing a program with the CORD-19 Vaccine in an attempt to find a solution to halt the spread of this virus.

In New Delhi, India said on Saturday that 201 people died due to COVID-19 while 18,645 new cases of the coronavirus were registered in the past 24 hours. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that fatalities due to COVID-19 rose to 150,999 as the total number of positive cases mounted to 10,450,284.

According to the ministry, 10,075,959 people recuperated from the pandemic as it spread to 35 states. India has the world's second-highest caseload, but daily infections have dipped steadily since hitting a peak in September.

In Seoul, South Korea's new Coronavirus cases dropped to the lowest level in a month on Saturday, Yonhap News Agency reported. South Korea added 641 more COVID-19 cases, including 596 local infections, raising the total caseload to 67,999, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The government extended the current level 2.5 distancing measures in the capital area and Level 2 restrictions in the rest of the country until Jan. 17. South Korea is grappling to contain yet another wave of virus infections with the toughest social distancing rules banning gatherings of five or more people.

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has registered more than 7.7 million cases of the virus since the pandemic began, while the official death toll has risen to 195,725, according to ministry data.

Brazil ranks third in terms of infection numbers globally, behind the United States and India. On fatalities, Brazil ranks second behind the US.

Argentina, Colombia and Mexico have also recorded more than one million cases and all three countries are still seeing very high numbers of daily confirmed cases. Peru is also approaching the milestone of one million cases, although daily cases are falling. The country has one of the highest deaths rates in the world.

Mexico reported a record 16,105 new confirmed coronavirus cases, along with 1,135 additional fatalities during the 24 past hours, according to Health Ministry data. This is bringing its total tally to 1,524,036 infections and 133,204 deaths,

Africa has recorded more than two and half million cases, but the true extent of the pandemic there is not known as testing rates are low. South Africa, with more than 800,000 cases and nearly 23,000 deaths, is the worst affected country on the continent.

Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia are the only other African countries to officially record more than 100,000 cases.

In Cairo, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population said on Sunday that 989 more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus and 57 patients died over the past 24 hours. The figures took the country’s tally to 148,799 infections and 8,142 deaths the ministry said. Another 765 patients have been discharged from the hospitals, bringing the overall recoveries to 118,294.

In Rabat, Morocco on Saturday said confirmed coronavirus cases had risen by 1,416 over the past 24 hours, while 24 more people succumbed to the disease to up the country’s death toll to 7,709. The North African nation’s caseload has reached 451,637 since the contagion came to light, according to the Health Ministry’s data, 1,469 infected people have recovered which showed the tally of people who have recovered from the virus till date as 423,541.

In Tunis, Tunisia’s Ministry of Health on Saturday announced 45 deaths from the novel coronavirus and 2,649 more infections in 24 hours. The tally of confirmed deaths and infections rose to 5,153 and 157,514 respectively since the outbreak of the virus. Meanwhile, overall recoveries went up to 116,526.

Meanwhile, Mauritania’s Ministry of Health said Saturday that 77 persons tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the country’s caseload to 15,429. One more fatality in the last 24 hours pushed the death toll from the viral illness to 383. The report said, 123 patients have been discharged from hospitals, raising the overall recoveries to 13,306 cases. — Agencies
