Saudi Arabia added to UK’s safe travel corridor list

LONDON — Britain has added Saudi Arabia to its safe travel corridor list, meaning those arriving from the Kingdom will no longer have to self-isolate, UK Transport Minister Grant Shapps said on Thursday.

Along with Saudi Arabia, the southern African country of Botswana has also been added to the list.

"BOTSWANA and SAUDI ARABIA have been ADDED to the #TravelCorridor list. If you arrive from these places after 4am Sat 12 Dec you do NOT need to self-isolate," Shapps said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Canary Islands, a popular destination for British tourists, has been removed from the safe travel corridor list.

According to the UK transport minister, data from the islands showed cases and positive tests were increasing, and so from Saturday morning, people arriving in England would have to enter quarantine.

The UK updates its safe travel corridor list regularly, adding and removing destinations by taking into account their rate of coronavirus cases in order to curb the spread of the virus in the country.

The UK considers imposing quarantine conditions when a country's rate of infection exceeds 20 cases per 100,000 people over seven days.
