RIYADH —
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Justice confirmed on Wednesday that a court had turned down a lawsuit filed by a father seeking exemption from paying maintenance for his daughter, claiming that she has reached 18 years of age. While dismissing the petition, the court ruled that the young woman can take care of her expenses and that her father should continue to pay for her upkeep until she gets married.

In the lawsuit, the father also claimed that she can work to earn her livelihood. But the young woman told the court that she had not reached the legal age of 18 and is not ready to work. The young woman, who currently lives with her divorced mother, also informed that she is ready to live with her father, the ministry pointed out.
