NEW DELHI — India's coronavirus cases crossed the 6 million mark with a spike of 82,170 new infections and 1,039 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, according to the federal health ministry on Monday.

This brings the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 6,074,703 and the virus-related fatalities to 95,542 so far the ministry data showed.

Meanwhile, out of the total reported cases, there are 962,640 active cases while a total of 5,016,521 people have recovered from the deadly disease.

Globally, India has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases, behind the United States where infections crossed 7 million last week.

The western Indian state of Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected by the pandemic reporting 273,646 active cases, 1,030,015 recoveries and 35,571 deaths.

Karnataka with 104,743 active cases is the next in the list. While 462,241 patients in the southern state have recovered, the disease has claimed 8,582 lives so far.

The southern state of Andhra Pradesh with 64,876 active cases is also severely affected, however, over 600,000 patients have recovered in the State, while 5,708 patients have succumbed to the deadly virus.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 71,967,230 coronavirus examinations have been conducted up to Sept. 27.
