50 volunteers register to enrich Wikipedia’s Arabic content

RIYADH — Fifty men and women have registered as volunteers to enriching the Arabic content in Wikipedia, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said on Monday.

The registration comes within the volunteering work platform of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, in cooperation with “WikiDowen.” It is one of the projects of the Saudi Center for Digital Content of the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darah).

The volunteerism opportunity aims to enrich the Arabic content in Wikipedia by creating new articles in the encyclopedia, or developing and translating existing articles, in the historical and cultural fields, monuments, archaeology and development. These volunteers will from Sept. 20 – 27.

It will allow the volunteers to make important gains and benefits, such as serving Arabic content, making the best use of their time, building editing skills in the encyclopedia, building and documenting public relations for the volunteers, in addition to obtaining documentation for the hours they have volunteered such that it will benefit that in their academic and practical life.

The volunteering tasks include attending an online distance learning training course on how to edit in Wikipedia; creating, or developing or translating articles in Wikipedia, with a size of 5000 bytes.

More volunteering opportunities will be launched in the near future, and those interested and willing to participate in them can access the platform's website via the link (https://nvg.gov.sa/).
