RIYADH —
With an all-time high number of 4,507 new daily coronavirus cases recorded during the last 24 hours, the total number of confirmed infections in Saudi Arabia reached 132,048 on Monday, the health ministry said.

Monday marks the second consecutive day when the number of infections crossed the 4,000-mark. On Sunday, the Kingdom reported 4,233 cases.

Thirty-nine people died of the virus raising the Covid-19 death toll in the Kingdom to 1,011, the ministry added. There were 3,170 recoveries announced on Monday taking the overall number to 87,890.

Riyadh recorded the highest number of cases, where 1,658 new infections were reported in the city alone. Jeddah reported 413 new cases, while Makkah reported 389 new infections.

There were 270 cases in Dammam, 295 in Hufof, 183 in Qatif, 130 in Taif and 125 in Madinah. The other new cases were confirmed in cities and provinces across the country.

Officials have said that the rise is mostly due to the fact that people in large numbers have failed to comply with public health measures.

The rate of infection of the novel coronavirus is rising due to a lack of adherence with social distancing measures, health ministry spokesman Dr. Muhammad Al-Abdel Ali said on Sunday.

The increase in the rate of infection, which had dropped to a low of one percent in May, is an indication that some citizens and residents have not been following preventative measures and avoiding large gatherings, Dr. Al-Abdel Ali said.
