RIYADH – The Shoura Council will review next week the Saher speeding regulations and will recommend revoking the provision to double the fine for defaulters.

According to Article 73 of the Saher traffic law, if a fine is not paid within 30 days of the violation, the offender will incur the maximum fine. The Shoura will discuss a report  prepared by its Security Committee in this regard.

The report is based on a study carried out by an expert team from the Ministry of Interior after looking into various legal and social aspects of the Saher regulations.

The committee’s recommendations included making amendment in the Article to cancel the doubling of Saher fines if they are not paid within the stipulated period of time, Okaz/Saudi Gazette learnt from official sources at the Shoura Council.

The committee proposed that the fine should not be increased if it is not paid within 30 days. However, fines should increase with the increase in speed. If speed is less than 25 km over the speed limit, the fine will be SR300, but it will be increased to SR400 for a higher speed.

The speed rate has been categorized and the fines range from a minimum of SR300 to a maximum of SR900.

If a driver is caught with a speed exceeding the maximum limit, then there will not be any fine but instead he will be referred to special court for trial and the punishment would include jail terms.

In case of repeating the violation, his driving license will be canceled.
