LONDON — Anapurna, ridden by Frankie Dettori, edged out the highly fancied Pink Dogwood to win the Oaks at Epsom on Friday.

The victory was a first Classic success for Anapurna's sire Frankel, who was responsible for three fillies in the race, including the favorite Mehdaayih.

But Anapurna showed she is the pick of that crop as Dettori drove her up to beat Ryan Moore on Pink Dogwood.

Dettori told ITV Racing: "There was a small gap. I thought I wasn't going to get it, but she's very courageous.

"I was getting him (Moore) and then in the last 30 yards I got him. Beautiful."

He added: "I absolutely love it. My first one (Oaks on Balanchine) was 25 years ago and I'm still here."

Dettori previously won the Oaks on Moonshell in 1995, Kazzia in 2002 and Enable two years ago.

Trainer John Gosden paid tribute to Anapurna's breeders, the Meon Valley Stud, who are hoping for an Epsom double when Telecaster runs in the Derby on Saturday.

"These are fantastic owner-breeders who breed them with a passion and they've won the Oaks, which is what it's all about," Gosden said.

"It was a brave performance by horse and jockey. He found a gap on the inside and took it." — AFP
