JEDDAH — The Personal Affairs Court in Jeddah has revoked a man’s guardianship over his daughter because he refused to remarry the woman to her ex-husband.

The Shariah Court judge who had given the approval for remarriage has taken over the woman’s guardianship.

The Court of Appeals approved the verdict, making it final and binding.

Neither the woman nor the father were identified but court sources said she has six children from her ex and she wanted to go back to him but the father rejected the idea due to differences between them.

The sources said the woman was divorced about two years ago and since then she was trying in vain to convince her father to allow her to go back to the father of her children.

When she lost hope of convincing her father to remarry her to her ex-husband, the woman filed a complaint with the court asking for removing her guardianship from her father.

The sources said the court subpoenaed the father but he refused to appear, so it decided to hold the hearing in his absence and informed him about its decision electronically.

The court reviewed the divorce deed, listened to a number of witnesses who confirmed the adamant attitude of father. It then decided to lift the man’s guardianship on his daughter.

The witnesses said the father refused all the good offices exerted the family elders and tribal chiefs to remarry his daughter to her ex-husband.

The Justice Ministry said in a statement on Monday 11,000 marriage and divorce deeds were concluded in the country in March.

The ministry said about 84 percent of the marriage contracts were between Saudi couples. It added that about 42 percent of the deeds were issued in Makkah and the Eastern Province.

It said the daily number of marriage deeds ranged from 366 to 917 while the divorce deeds were between 140 and 251.
