DAMMAM — A prominent scholar has said there is no religious bar on women officiating marriage ceremonies.
Sheikh Abdullah Al-Minai said the job of marriage officiators is to document marriages.
“If the Ministry of Justice decided to allow women to work as marriage officiators, there is no religious stance against it. Any marriage officiator must be licensed from the ministry and applicants should preferably have a degree in Islamic law,” said Al-Minai.
He added other university degrees may be accepted as well.
“In some cases, a high school certificate is sufficient to grant license to a marriage officiator. It depends on general qualifications of the applicants. But all applicants must have a clean record,” said Al-Minai.
