BAHA – Parents of secondary students in Zainab Bint Abu Rafi school in Aqiq province say they are scared for the health and safety of their daughters as 300 students are crammed in a decrepit class room in a 20-year-old-rented building.
Parents said they believe that the environment in which their daughters learn is unacceptable and scary, and that they expect the worst because of the decrepit building and repeated electrical faults.
One student said that the high school building is overcrowded and lacks adequate ventilation, with dust build-up causing respiratory issues, especially for students with asthma.
The student warned of the growing risk of electrical shocks and fires because of major electrical faults in the school’s kitchen. The student said it was important that an appropriate learning environment was provided to the students, and suggested that they be transferred to a school nearby with empty space until construction of their building was complete.
Another student said the authorities needed to look at their suffering, and said that authorities would not take any action until after a major disaster happened. According to an informed source, the school’s management had received instructions to transfer some students to a nearby school while others remained in the worn-out building.
