Saudi Arabia slams move to form political council in Yemen

JEDDAH – The Council of Ministers on Monday reiterated that the agreement reached between Houthis and followers of ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh to form a political council in Yemen is an obstacle to reach a political agreement to end the suffering of the Yemeni people.

The Cabinet considered it as a flagrant violation of the resolutions of the Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the United Nations Security Council (Resolution 2216), as well as the Gulf Cooperation Council’s initiative and its executive mechanism and the outcome of the comprehensive national dialogue.

Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior, chaired the session at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah.

Adel Al-Turaifi, minister of culture and information, said the Cabinet rejected unfounded allegations of some NGOs and human rights organizations that the Command of the coalition forces supporting legitimacy in Yemen is blocking delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni territories.
It also emphasized that the Kingdom is the biggest donor of humanitarian aid to Yemen with spending so far more than $500 million worth of supplies.

While welcoming the Nouakchott Declaration at the conclusion of the 27th Arab summit in Mauritania, the Cabinet highlighted the Kingdom’s assurance before the summit that the scenario now witnessed in the region and the world at large showing violent extremism and sporadic terrorist acts pose a threat to the Arab region as well as to international peace and security, and that many of culprits taking part in these terrorist crimes are trying to attach them to Islam which is nothing to do with such accusations.

The Cabinet renewed the Kingdom’s calls for intensifying efforts at all levels to fight terrorism and extremism in the security, military, financial and intellectual aspects. It also cited the Kingdom’s initiative in this regard to establish an Islamic military alliance to fight terrorism and violence, with its members reached 40 Arab and Islamic countries.

The Cabinet also denounced the Israeli decision to construct 770 new settlement units in the occupied East Jerusalem as part of the continuing aggression against the State of Palestine.

Al-Turaifi said the Cabinet approved a cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of atomic energy with the government of Finland, signed in Helsinki in 2015.

The Cabinet appointed Princess Rima Bint Bandar Bin Sultan Al Saud as undersecretary of president at the women’s section of the General Authority for Sports in the rank of 15.
