LONDON — Celtic beat its closest challenger Aberdeen 3-2 Sunday to secure the Scottish Premier League title for the fifth year in a row.
Winger Patrick Roberts struck twice in the first 20 minutes and Mikael Lustig added the third for Celtic four minutes after halftime.
Niall McGinn and Andrew Considine pulled two goals back for the visitors but Celtic hung on to move 12 points ahead of Aberdeen in the table with two games left.
"It means we are the best team in Scotland," Celtic manager Ronny Deila said. "In the league we have been consistent but the last two months we have not had the same drive and energy in the team," added the Norwegian who is leaving Celtic at the end of the season after two years in charge.
"There have been some bad results which make the season a bit grey, rather than white," Deila said.
It was the 47th Scottish league title in Celtic's history, seven behind its archrival Rangers which will return to the top flight next season after four years in the lower divisions following the club's liquidation in 2012.
PSV Eindhoven wins Dutch title
In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven successfully defended its Dutch league title by beating PEC Zwolle 3-1 Sunday as Ajax could only manage a 1-1 draw at second-last De Graafschap Doetinchem.
It was the second straight Eredivisie title for Phillip Cocu's PSV and the 23rd in the Eindhoven club's history.
Ajax went into the final day of the season ahead of PSV on goal difference and only needed to beat De Graafschap to seal its 34th Dutch league title.
Amin Younes gave Ajax the lead in the 16th, but Bryan Smeets leveled the scores 10 minutes after the break and Ajax could not break through for a winning goal in the remainder of the second half.
In Zwolle, Juergen Locadia opened the scoring and captain Luuk de Jong scored twice. — Agencies
