BEIRUT - Lebanon has spoken: The people want Hollywood actor George Clooney as their President!

An online campaign launched by “Explore Lebanon” this week has gone viral on Arab social media, after the Facebook page invited Lebanese people to vote for Clooney as their new President, reports Albawaba.com

The campaign kicked off with a photo of Clooney standing tall with folded arms, and a red sash resembling the Lebanese flag strapped around him.

The photo’s caption read, “Support George Clooney for Lebanese Presidency... he is our last resort.”

It continued, “As the saying goes: My Brother-in-Law, my savior,” referring to the fact that Clooney is married to Lebanese lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

But could Clooney do a good job of turning Lebanon around after the country failed to elect a President for the 24th time since May 2014? He is actively involved in world politics through various global campaigns and projects.

He recently met with Syrian refugees in Berlin, who told him and his wife Amal about their struggles back in Syria and the dangerous road they had to take in order to reach Germany safe and sound.

Clooney recently said he and his 38-year-old wife plan their jet-setting lives to spend as much time together as they can — and rely on social media when they are forced to be apart.

Clooney, 54, told Hello magazine: “We have a rule whereby we are never apart for more than a week. We also stay in touch via social media so we try to keep close even if we’re in different parts of the world.

“We have a place in London now where it’s easy for us to spend a lot of time together and I can work on new film projects — writing, reading scripts — or we can go to Lake Como or spend time in Los Angeles when I need to have meetings for my acting work, or hang around with some of my friends. It takes some planning but it’s actually been working out very well for us. She also looks great on the red carpet!”

Next month the couple are hosting a £20,000-a-ticket fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign at their LA home. Their “London” house is a £10 million mansion in the Berkshire village of Sonning, near Reading. Clooney, who married the lawyer in 2014, said their shared interest in humanitarian causes was a bedrock of their relationship.

He explained: “We have a very strong connection and she’s an extraordinary woman doing great work. We’re both committed and share a common concern for causes like the refugee crisis, but what really brings us together as a couple is the fact that we’re good friends and we enjoy each other’s company.”

Clooney, who is appearing alongside Julia Roberts in “Money Monster,” is set to direct another Ocean’s Eleven co-star, Matt Damon, in “Suburbicon.” - Agencies
