Jets end Capitals’ winning streak

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Mark Scheifele scored with 20 seconds left in overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets over Washington 2-1 Saturday to end the Capitals’ season-high six-game winning streak.

Scheifele got his goal after Jacob Trouba cycled down low with the puck. Trouba passed to Scheifele in the left faceoff circle, and Scheifele fired by Braden Holtby glove side.

Washington coach Barry Trotz challenged the goal for Jets forward Blake Wheeler being offside, but it stood.

Jets rookie Connor Hellebuyck made 37 saves in his third NHL game to remain undefeated.

Holtby had his career-high eight-game winning streak end. He stopped 34 shots.

Captain Andrew Ladd scored on the power play for Winnipeg.

Kings 5, Penguins 3: Defenseman Jake Muzzin had a goal and two assists while left-wing Milan Lucic added two goals as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Lucic’s empty net goal sealed the victory at 18:45 in the third period on an assist from defenseman Drew Doughty.

Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick stopped 17 shots.

Maple Leafs 4, Blues 1: Center Nazem Kadri scored two goals to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Brad Boyes and Pierre-Alexandre Parentau also scored for Toronto, while Roman Polak provided two assists as the Maple Leafs took a 3-1 lead after the second period. Blues right-wing Vladimir Tarasenko converted a 2-on-1 break with center Paul Stastny and beat goalie Garret Sparks early in the first period.

Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 2: Center Jeff Skinner scored his second goal of the game five seconds into a power play as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Eastern Conference-leading Montreal Canadiens. Goalie Cam Ward stopped 36 shots.

Senators 3, Islanders 2 (OT): Defenseman Erik Karlsson took a pass from winger Bobby Ryan to score the overtime winner with 1:26 left as the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Islanders.

Senators winger Mike Hoffman scored his 10th goal in the last nine games with 36.2 seconds left in regulation.

Red Wings 5, Predators 4 (OT): Right-winger Gustav Nyquist’s breakaway goal 1:41 into overtime gave the Detroit Red Wings a 5-4 win against the Nashville Predators.

Blue Jackets 4, Flyers 1: Left-winger Scott Hartnell and goalie Sergei Bobrovsky did damage to their former team, helping the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1.

Bruins 4, Canucks 0: Center Landon Ferraro scored a goal and added an assist and goaltender Tuukka Rask stopped 17 shots as the Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0.

Lightning 4, Sharks 3: Nikita Kucherov scored two goals and the Tampa Bay Lightning extended the San Jose Sharks’ home woes with a 4-3 victory. — Agencies
