RIYADH – One worshipper was killed and several others wounded on Monday in a bombing at a mosque in the southern Najran province bordering Yemen, according to Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, security spokesman at the Ministry of Interior.
The attack occurred at Al-Mashhad Mosque in Al-Dahda district in Najran city after Maghreb (evening) prayers.
“A man wearing explosive belt entered the mosque while worshippers were leaving the mosque after finishing their prayers and blew himself up in the midst of the crowd,” Al-Turki said, adding that the injured worshippers were taken to hospital, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The security authorities have started a probe into the attack, the spokesman said.
“We are working on identify the suicide bomber,” Al-Turki said.
This is not the first time mosques have been targeted by bombers in the Kingdom. In mid-October, five people were killed after a gunman opened fire on a meeting hall in the city of Sihat in the Eastern Province.
In August, at least 12 security officers were killed after a suicide bomber targeted a mosque used by special forces in the southern city of Abha. The Daesh (so called IS) militant group claimed responsibility for two separate attacks which took place in May and August.
