CALGARY, Alberta — Connor McDavid scored twice and added an assist for the first multi-point game of his young career, and each of Edmonton’s four first-overall draft picks scored as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 Saturday night.
McDavid broke a 1-1 tie with 3:29 left in the second period. After carrying the puck through the neutral zone, the 18-year-old used Kris Russell as a screen and scored past Jonas Hiller on a long wrist shot.
With his parents in attendance, this year’s first-overall pick then capped the scoring with 3:40 left in the third, converting Taylor Hall’s pass for a power-play goal that brought out boos from Flames fans and loud cheers from the many Oilers fans in attendance.
Hall also had a three-point game for Edmonton (1-4-0), with a goal and two assists. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov also scored.
David Jones scored both goals for Calgary (1-4-0), giving him three on the season. The Flames had won seven in a row against their provincial rival.
Capitals 4, Hurricanes 1: Washington center Nicklas Backstrom celebrated his season debut with a goal and two assists, T.J. Oshie added a goal and an assist and the Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.
Backstrom, who missed three games while recovering from hip surgery, helped give Washington the lead when he assisted on Oshie’s first period power-play goal.
Early in the third, Backstrom corralled a loose puck along the boards in the Carolina end,fired on net and the puck appeared to hit a Hurricanes defenseman before sneaking between goalie Cam Ward’s pads to make it 2-0.
John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin added two more third-period goals for Washington (3-1-0), who won the final two games of their four-game season-opening homestand.
Lightning 2, Sabres 1: Alex Killorn scored the game-winning goal on a power play at 16:03 in the third period to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Killorn scored his first goal of the season after Tyler Johnson found him on a sharp pass with Sabres goalie Chad Johnson out of position. Killorn sent the puck into the open end of the net for the easy goal.
Buffalo left wing Sam Reinhart scored the first goal of his NHL career at 2:52 in the first period off of a nice pass from Tyler Ennis.
Stars 4, Panthers 2: Tyler Seguin scored the winning goal with 3:02 left in the third period as the Dallas Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Florida Panthers 4-2 at the BB&T Center.
Seguin had two goals and an assist to power Dallas (4-1-0), who also got two goals from Jamie Benn, including an empty-netter with 18.6 seconds left.
Penguins 2, Maple Leafs 1: The Pittsburgh Penguins rode quick-strike goals in the first period from Evgeni Malkin and Olli Maatta to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Phil Kessel, who led the Maple Leafs in scoring for six consecutive seasons before being dealt to Pittsburgh, was held without a point. Sidney Crosby did not register a point for the fifth consecutive game, his longest stretch to start a season.
Canadiens 4, Red Wings 1: Montreal’s power play came to life to lift the Canadiens to a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Bell Centre.
Brendan Gallagher, Jeff Petry, Tomas Plekanec and Brian Flynn scored for the Canadiens (6-0-0), while Dylan Larkin replied for the Red Wings (3-2-0).
Goaltender Carey Price stopped 21 shots for Montreal, Petr Mrazek made 37 saves for Detroit.
Predators 4, Senators 3 (SO): James Neal scored the decisive goal in a shootout as the Nashville Predators defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 at the Canadian Tire Center. Neal also scored two power play goals as the Predators improved to 4-1-0.
Islanders 6, Sharks 3: Kyle Okposo scored the tiebreaking goal 4:18 into the third period as the New York Islanders defeated San Jose 6-3 at Barclays Center, snapping the Sharks’ four-game winning streak to start the season.
Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 22 shots in his season debut after recovering from an upper-body injury.
