NEW YORK — New York Police Department commissioner William Bratton apologized Thursday to former tennis star James Blake for an officer's rough actions in detaining him in a case of mistaken identity.

Blake, who is biracial, said he was slammed to the ground and handcuffed and detained for 15 minutes.

Blake had earlier said on ABC's "Good Morning America: "I'd like an apology. I'd like an explanation for how they conducted themselves because I think we all need to be held accountable for our actions, and police as well."

The New York Times reported that the officer who stopped Blake has been placed on desk duty after a first review of video evidence raised Bratton's concern over "the inappropriateness of the amount of force that was used during the arrest."

Former world No. 4 Blake, 35, was in town to make endorsement appearances and was met by a group of police officers — all of them white — just outside his hotel, who sought a person in connection with a fraud case.

"I don't know if it's as simple as that," the 35-year-old Blake told the News. "To me it's as simple as unnecessary police force, no matter what my race is.

"In my mind there's probably a race factor involved, but no matter what there's no reason for anybody to do that to anybody."

Bratton told CNN the man officers were seeking looked like "the twin brother of Mr. Blake."

A cooperating witness had misidentified Blake to detectives investigating fraudulently purchased cellphones, said Stephen Davis, spokesman for the New York Police Department.

"Once Blake was properly identified and found to have no connection to the investigation, he was released from police custody immediately," Davis said in a statement. But Blake said their actions weren't acceptable.

"I was standing there doing nothing — not running, not resisting, in fact, smiling," he said.

Blake won 10 titles in his career, making almost $8 million. He last played on the tour in 2013. — Agencies
