Battered woman denied help

Last updated: Thursday, September 13, 2012 12:58 AM

RIYADH — A woman who is suffering domestic abuse at the hands of her father said she fears for her life after three organizations said they could not help her.

The woman said she is slowly dying and has medical reports to prove she is being abused by her father.

She claimed her father is also violent toward her mother and four of her siblings.

Her father married her off to a man who she divorced shortly after the marriage, the woman added.

She said she filed a lawsuit against her father after he stopped her from getting married again.

The woman said officials at a foster home for girls told her they were not allowed to receive cases of domestic violence and that she should go to a protection home.

She added that she contacted the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) more than once but they did not respond.

A source at a police station visited by the woman said they receive such cases and their role in any instance would be to talk to the victim’s male guardian first. — SG
